Does anybody have the Mikame Nest of Boxes/Prediction Chest that they can do a review on?

The Nest of Boxes are beautiful! What info do you want?
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

I was wondering if the handling is clean & if an assitant would be needed for proper handling.
I'm talking about the stage version that works as both nest of boxes as well as a prediction chest. I like Mikames stuff & was wondering if this was worth getting. |

Are you referring to the two box set with the red handles on top?

No, this is the 3 box set that retails around $340.00.

This is a "joe berg" style set as is the 5-box nest from mel babcock. except the innermost box is lippincot rather than the berg slider.
both sets have the same problem with angles. the largest box just isn't wide enough to hide what must be hidden when spectators are not directly in front. otherwise, the boxes are beauties. I expecially like the inlays on the babcock model. george robinson of viking can make a set with an elevator table which is almost angle-proof, but I think he only wants to make it for professional "names". I tried for several months to get one, but he never seemed too have time to do it. now that he also has collectors workshop I expect he is even less inclined to do custom work. I hope this helps. |

Baldo,
I have the boxes, and no assistant is required at all. --Josh |

Might check out Mel Babcock's nest of boxes. I think there are 5 and they are beautiful.

Mel's are/were a limited run and may not be available.
Viking/Himber nest of boxes is one of the best values, but I think there's an availability problem here, too. |

I believe Mel is still making them...I purchased a set within the past month. These boxes are indeed beautiful and IMHO a better value than the Mikame version (which I have examined as well). For photos & reviews of Mel Babcock's boxes see:

I seem to recall he is manufacturing this "special" edition in a run of 25 (you may have acquired one of a limited number!).

Yes...I did purchase one of this limited run ~ 1 month ago...but Mel may still have more available. He will typically cut the pieces of wood in a single run & wait to assemble as orders come in. He also makes a key stand that goes with the boxes & is very nice as well. You can reach Mel through his site:

The Viking/Himber nest of boxes is incredible! It can be performed without any assistant and the boxes will stand up to significant examination and scrutiny (not that I encourage that). Very well made with excellent attention to detail. Craftsmanship at its finest and a very moderate price for such an heirloom (~$500-600). Worth every penny.
