In saying there are approximately 200,000 magicians in the world, for a +/- 3% error you would need 2,200 replies, for a +/- 5% error you would need 800 replies and for a +/1 10% error you would need 200 replies. So in essence you are very far away to claim a conclusion.

So for it to be valid it has to include every magician in the world I don't think any survey has ever included every single person who it effects so lets try and keep things real.
RNK as your quick to jump in I take it your all for exposure too as your another that insists on debating the fact if not what exactly is the point your trying to make sir. |

Well I, for one, appreciated seeing the unedited demo and explanation of the different features of the prop. Pretty sure that most magicians will already be familiar with the principle in play, here, so the questions we have are more along the lines of how good does the gimmick look, can it be innocently engaged after building the box in full view of the spectator, is there some protection built in to help ensure the box stays empty after the dump, and how easy is the reset. The video answered every one of those questions in a manner that a simple demo of the effect would not. If it were a public YouTube video that people were likely to stumble across inadvertently, that would be an issue. But it’s not.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Yawn
Let's get back to discussing this effect and not the boring mundane crap about exposure. It happens! Deal with it and move on. |

Could I make a presentation for Professor's Nightmare that didn't elicit the recognition? Maybe. But I don't do Professor's Nightmare, because 90% of magicians out there do it, and I have no interest in doing what they do.
Like I said before - if you can't come up with a way to present a trick that isn't similar to what other people are doing - don't do that trick. Done. Easy. There's hundreds/thousands of tricks out there that no one is doing. Do one of those instead. Your 'poll' was flawed on two significant accounts. One - way too small a response to draw any form of conclusion, and two - your options are way too limited. There are more than 2 legit ways to create demo videos. For example - if a method is based on scripting, it would not work to show a full performance because people will either complain that the demo gave everything away (so why did they pay for it) or they'll memorize the script from the demo and not pay the creator. Vendors basically have to choose who they're going to annoy with each demo video. It truly is impossible to please everyone. The people who search for exposure videos are, in my experience, by and large magicians. Laymen don't actually care - unless knowing the secret is more rewarding/interesting than the performance. Basically, if the performance relies solely on the magician knowing something the audience doesn't, the audience will interpret their role as being to find that secret out so they "win". If the 'script' consists of narrating the adventure of the props in the magician's hands, finding out the secret is far more interesting than the boredom of that presentation. Back on topic - I searched for this video with terms like "card appears lego blocks" "card trick legos" "card appears lego box" etc. No links to this video. The only way I could find it was using the phrase "mystery blox". I don't think this is getting the widespread exposure you may be envisioning, and I doubt anyone would be able to locate it afterward unless they were already familiar with the product's name. The video currently has 4,516 views. Statistically speaking, pretty small number actually - particularly when accounting for the face that many of those views are from the same people re-watching it (I know I've seen it 3 or 4 times myself). Roughly half the number who watched their spoof robbery video. Yes, exposure is an issue and it's something vendors have to consider - but it's certainly not black and white. Suggestion - read The Magic of Ascanio Vol 1 - the Structural Conception of Magic. His thoughts on secrets and sharing are very interesting.

I think you are just whining because you presented a flawed argument and were then called out on it. So you've chosen to make your "final" remark even more flawed. You have conveniently ignored anything presented here that goes against your argument. One of the very first posts in response to your claims pointed out that the results that you (as a magician) will get are very different from what a layman would see. A layperson would have to consciously try and seek out this video and even then would likely not be successful in finding it. But you have never really addressed that factor. You keep claiming it is public for the entire world to see as if it just beckoning everyone to watch it. Almost as if it unavoidable to anyone who searches for a LEGO box. But anyway, you've made your case. Best to just move on like you said. |

Dealers at Blackpool don’t all expose the workings to everyone. You normally have to ask but when you have been 24 years on the trot it’s fair to say they will show me, of course some layman possibly are watching but it’s not at every table all the time.
Like I say I just ask as they know I may well buy the effect. Olly |

I take it that was a joke Tony, they have nicked a lot of them gags from lesser known club/circuit performers.
The first thing they do every morning is go on to certain websites and look for the latest gags as do the professional club/circuit perforners do as well. that's their first port of call for all comedians on a daily basis, Olly |

Infact two of the biggest names in the land basically nicked club performers acts, they slightly cleaned it up to gain massive TV fame.
This includes their mannerisms, gags and patter the whole complete shebang. Olly |

Warren I’ve got a great idea unless I’m mistaken this thread is not about exposure so why don’t you just go away let the thread return to what it should be and start your own topic on exposure. Maybe you could also start one on surveys, or perhaps we should carry out our own surveys on who thinks that would be a good idea.

Or agree with you Warren or partly agree and move on. Move on being the key 2 words, the problem is there is nowt more to say about the actual effect in all honesty that hasn’t already been said. Olly

I used this at several events including a school fundraiser dinner and it has gone over great with both the children and the adults.
If appropriate based on the group, I lead into it with Baffling Blocks by Eric Leclerc. I ask if anyone either plays with Legos now or did when they were younger which leads me into the effects. If there are people into Legos (there often are), I talk a little about some of the massive Lego projects that have happened. So far, no comments from anyone (at least none that I heard) indicating that they had seen it and knew how it worked. Even the magicians I've shown it to hadn't heard of it. |
