I have several favorite illusions which I no longer use. I am always thinking I will use these someday but never have.
Another problem is my female assistant is also overweight now and can no longer fit in some of them, LOL! Should I dispose of them or just keep them? I'm sure some of you are in the same situation.

I got rid of some in the past and even years later kicked myself. You never know when one will be just what you need and you can rarely replace one for the same cost.

That's a tough one. In my garage I have several Illusions , for example a zig zag, palaquin, doll house and several others I had not used in at least 15 years. Now that I'm getting close to 60 I was thinking about getting rid of them. Then last year I received a call if I could do a 90 minute illusion show, glad I had the illusions, but now I'm thinking, what if it's another 15 years again before I need them..dang by then I'll be pushing them around on stage with my walker!

Will you ever consider putting them back in a show? Depends on your style TODAY. We all evolve and change our style of performing, and hence our choice of material. Ever consider renting them out to other performers? That way you still own them, and could use them in the future. Cheaper than replacement should the need arise.

I had to re-read your post because at first I thought you were wondering if you should dispose of your assistant. That would be kind of awkward...

Well I think you should dispose of them by sending them to me!

I have also considered what to do. The past couple of years I have sold off several illusions, mainly duplicates. I have also rented a couple to other professional performers in my area. One thing it comes down to is space. At present I have the space to store my 60 odd illusions at no out of pocket cost to me, but I have had several friends who have disposed of some of their props due to the high cost of renting storage space.
Another interesting factor is resale, if like me you are talking about really old props (ie. you have had them a long time) or you picked them up at a low cost, selling could be profitable. An example of a recent sale, I sold an illusion that I purchased in the early 80's, used it for 100's of shows (malls, t.v. etc) and sold it last year for 2 1/2 times my purchase price. AND I still have another unit. The profit on this one will cover losses on perhaps another sale. It's all really a personal decision and no one really knows your business, but best of luck. Thanks for your reactions to my question. Around 60% of my illusions I have asked a magician friend to keep and use them. He is sort of my storage keeper.
I am 61 now and have been performing professionally since I was 20. I guess the 40% left with my illusions I just store in a room here, hoping one day I could use them again. Same goes with my other stage props. Selling them would not give me the price I want nowadays. It is hard to part with things that someday we might need again, LOL! Magic is a selfless profession, without an audience, these things are useless. But for now, I still perform until I ride my first wheelchair.

And even then you can direct, teach, mentor, produce (I'm 67 and not planning on quitting either). I take as inspiration John Calvert, Harry Blackstone Sr. regarding age and performing, also Abb Dickson for the way he used his physical look in the routines that he performed..
Many of my props I would get back what I paid for them, if not more. Perhaps not todays list price, but I also have to remember these were purchased and expensed off of my magic income over the years. >>>>>> PLUS I have had fun with the stuff!!! LOL Blair
