Sure.
Those weren't four different tenses, but four different names for a tense (which is really an aspect; but I digress.) "I run." Present indicative. "I am running." Present progressive. (Also called: present continuous, continuous present, and progressive present.) Gerund: "Running is fun." Participle: "I saw a running man." Intensity: "He is always running!" Also: "When you called yesterday I was running." Past progressive. This stuff isn't important. It's just a way of trying to analyze inflection, which is the way we change words to change meaning. In English we don't inflect a lot. But in other languages they do, and the ING is very confusing. It's too versatile. For an example, I'll choose a nonsense word: scunching. I scunched yesterday. I saw a man scunching yesterday. I saw a scunching man yesterday. I scunching saw a man yesterday. Or: I scunching saw a scunching man scunching scunching yesterday. Scuncher! |
