Crediting question. Who was the first in a three fly type routine to ask if the coin should go visibly or invisibly? Then visibly place the coin into the other hand? I need the name and reference. Thanks for your help!

Chris Kenner's Threefly booklet (1991) has that gag.

Dunno about within the context of a three fly routine, but as a straight gag, it's so old you'd need to carbon date it. In The Art of Magic it's used in both a billiard ball routines and a cards across trick. Considering the way jokes were shared back then, it probably carried cooties.

Thanks for those references. I found both gags in the Art of Magic, and will check out Kenner's routine.

Joe Cole said Kennedy published the joke in 91 in Roger Klause's book, I wonder if there is an earlier reference for Kennedy. Someone said on another forum that they remember Kennedy using the joke back in 85. I wonder if he was the first to apply the joke to a coins across.

So, thanks to Curtis Kam, Milt Kort applied the gag to coins in Bobo, in his Coins through Table using a shell. This may also be the first use of a shell to get a coin into a spectator's hand! Interesting that Kort used it in a CTT and not a Coins Across, likely he did and it may be in pri t elsewhere.

If you want to abstract the gag from the "three fly" - look at the traditional method for the die box.
The magician proposes to pass the die from the box into the borrowed hat. So saying he openly transfers the die into the hat. Oh, you wanted magic? He removes the die from the hat and replaces it into the box. ( <-- the mechanics is done so it's all byplay now ) The box is shown empty, and the die cleanly removed from the hat.

Yes, the Die Box is probably the first place where the gag was used. That dates back to the 1853 according to Magicpedia, I believe, which in itself predates the gag on the cards from pocket to pocket in the Downs book.
