I made a full deck of double facers. I did it to get some more experience with splitting cards and making gaffed cards and because I had an idea for a trick.
The trick idea was to have a deck in new deck order and instantly convert it into a shuffled deck or vice versa. So I can say show a shuffled deck and then a moment later show that the deck is in new deck order (by just turning the cards over). With a double backer and a pass I can also transform the deck from a seemingly blue deck to a red deck or whatever takes your fancy. This post though is about some observations and hence some questions about card splitting. 1. Sometimes when I split a card there appeared to be a region where the glue was stronger and layers did not split evenly. Have others noticed this? Let me explain more carefully. I began the split and was pulling the top two layers off and then one of the top layers on part of the card did not come away and left a dark blackish patch on the one layer that was being split off. 2. When 1. happened I often then worked around the card to come at the same region from the opposite end. When I did this at times, and some other times I discovered that the one layer - the one of the three obvious layers - sometimes split into two very thin layers and the workaround did not match with one side half a layer thicker than the other. 3. While making the double facers I used two decks and so also made double backers - blue blue; red red; and blue red. My double backers came out much better quality on average than the double facers. I suspect this is because there is a larger amount of print on the backs which obscures some of the imperfections. Faults on the double facers were: - thin patches from 2. above. - dark patches from 1. above - other dark patches from the middle layer being dark and showing through on part of the card. This also sometimes happens on the edges of the double backers. 4. I also noticed a difference with the two decks I was using. I am not sure this generalises but the blue deck on pretty much every card split more easily than the red deck. I was alternating taking off the face from one deck and then the other as the one layer so this was not a difference between face and back layer being peeled off. Has anyone else noticed anything similar? I was using a different technique from each deck because of this problem. Essentially the technique with the blue deck was streamlined and much faster. With the red deck I was banging the corner on the table to soften it then bending the corner back and forth to get a split. With the blue deck a few back and forth movements with the corner resulted in a clean split very quickly without the banging on the table. I am interested in solutions to those problems and any other general advice that can help improve the quality of making these gaffs. |

The thing to bear in mind is that when you're splitting cards, there's actually three layers, not two. There's a layer of paper on the front, a layer of paper on the back and a layer of glue in-between, usually mixed with graphite or some other agent to make the paper layers opaque. With some practice it's possible to completely split away the glue layer.
You might want to check out some of Eoin O'Hare's tools at theperfectshuffle.com. If you aren't already able to access the "hidden" area of his site, ask him for access. He's released a series of tools designed to make card splitting and re-gluing easier to do. I'm eager to get some practice on them, so I can start offering my own work as a card splitter.
