I had my first job on Sunday. Well it was a two hour trial to see if they want me but it went completly fantastic. I was nervous for the first five minutes but for the first time ever my hands did no longer shake. I was so relaxed and the reactions were out of this world. I started with bitten coin always knocked em of sense they loved that then to a few card tricks ambitious card trick etc.. That killed over big time and then a coins across I have to their hands while theirs are closed that just sent half of them spinning.
However, I have learned from 1 or 2 mistakes as I'm working on a barge (boat restraunt). I was working next to water and I triee hot shot cut first time I was near the edge I lost 4 cards to the water and a few to ambitious card but was fine when in the middle. Apart from that it was fantastic. Now I need some advice. Does anybody have any sugestions how I can use the surrounding water to my advantage??? thanks xtreme

Congats. My advice is try to be organic. Let the surroundings dictate how you incorporate them into your act. Trying to force it might weaken things. Think about "scripted improvisation" your magic will be stronger.

Good going xtreme_mixers! Loosing a few cards here and there will happen, no matter where you perform, no biggie.
I totally agree with Jason. Kick back and let nature take its course, so to speak. Don't force water-type effects just because you're on the water. Routine dialogue should be loose, so that a change here and there to incorporate the environment can just be blended in naturally and easily. Good luck with the gig. Best, Mike |

I'd just brainstorm. Write down everything you can do, everything that might work, and everything that happens at the venue. Connect it up, add notes, cross out things - then organise the mess and see how you can link it. With luck a program or series of routines will present itself and you'll have some good lines that work well.
It's always nice to have some things that fit and a few lines to throw out for regular occurences... Best of Luck

Good Luck on the barge. Do Not borrow jewelry close to the edge of the boat. Check out the threads about horror stories involving ring flite.
On the other hand, if you were to carry some small heavy items that would not harm the environment if tossed into the water, (i.e. rocks?) Imagine approaching the table and asking if they're done with their salt, and then apparently tossing the shaker overboard. A nice ending to a set would be to reproduce the shaker. Careful on the toss. Confusion is not magic, and neither is hitting a busboy in the head with a rock.

Do not, under any circumstances, even attempt to consider performing "ring flight".

I heard a nice gag after doing the floating ring or your favorite ring routine (I do not do ring flight for the reason mentioned). Throw a rock in the water, then when they hear it and think it was the ring, say, just kidding, that was a nickel your ring is in my pocket. Then reach in and pull out a nickel and just look stunned.
I wish I had this while I worked at the General Jackson in Nashville, would've loved this. Thought I'd throw this in. Joey
