I was wondering if anyone has had any success at after show sales at fairs. I have been approached to sell the glow stick, glow necklaces, and other glow in the dark things at a July 4th fireworks show. They are estimating 75000-100000 people. I wanted to know if anyone has had success in doing this and where you purchased the glow materials. I was also looking for ideas of other products that I could sell that could bring in profit and advertise my magic services.
Thanks for the help, Tim |

Tim,
You can definitely do well selling items after your show at fairs. I always offer the booklet "102 EZ MAgic Tricks (available from D. Robbins, Brooklyn, NY) for $1-$2, as well as a bag of five simple tricks for $5. I don't know about glow sticks, but I suspect they will sell. Give it a try. Just don't make it too confusing by offering too many products, and be sure to comply with your state sales tax laws. |

Thanks Jim, the sales tax thing is the first thing I checked on this morning. I have some homework to do on that but I do not want to get on the wrong side of the law at this event.

In the section on consession sales in Volume Two of Success in Magic I relate a story where I almost got in trouble with the tax folks for not having a sales tax ID number.
Fortunately, it was a practical joke being played on me, but it did send the "fear of the tax man" into me and after that experience, I did my homework too. |

I would like to hear from others that might know about sales tax "stuff".
I live in Montana and we do not have sales tax, thus, no sales tax ID number needed. I also sell after shows and travel to states that do have sales tax. Am I required to pay a percentage of my sales to that state? What else should I know? Thanks Kent |

Most times I sell after the show and don't worry. Not so in every show I have done in Chatanooga. There The state tax people come to me as I am packing and ask how much I have sold, they then fill out the forms with my Soc. Sec. number and tell me I owe whatever it is in sales tax. They are very nice about it, offer to take a check so I have proof of payment with my cancelled check They have never asked me to prove that what I told them was the correct amount. They just want their money. Other states I have sold in have never bothered me and I have never asked. The best thing is to talk to the state sales tax people where you are going to do your show and get the information from them. |

A little off topic, but it never fails to amaze me that it is the United Staes of America and yet I constantly hear that there's one law in one state and a completely different one in the others. It gets confusing for poor old me and I don't live there.

That is because we are 50 separate states, unique each unto itself that are united with one common military and other protective departments for the common good. Also we are united in the ideals of democracy even though we may battle amonst ourselve about ways of achieving the goals. (i.e. Political party differences.)
Hope that help you understand us a little better. Peter |

We have a simular type in England and Sweden. Only in England they are called counties but, the law is the same throughout, taxes are the same and milatary etc. I guess you have to live there to understand.
