I did a triplets birthday party yesterday. There were about 25 kids and a dozen adults present, all in one room. It was a big room, but there was no A/C and it was over 90º yesterday. Sweat was pouring down my face before the kids even sat down. I loaded up on the deodorant before-hand, but man, I was saturated! What can you do about this? I normally get a bit hot before a show and as it's beginning, a result of my nerves I suppose. But this, coupled with the high heat in general, made for an uncomfortable time. Anyone else have problems with the sweat factor?

Bring a small hand towel, keep it in the table, and use it as necessary to mop your face off. Also have a white cotton handkerchief on your person to accomplish the same thing.
Bring a Sip-N-Saver type of bottle, filled with water, and drink as necessary during the performance. Keep yourself rehydrated and therefor cooler. You could also try going with lighter clothing. Bring an extra shirt so you have something fresh to change into after the performance. I've heard of others who bring small battery-operated fans along with them, to use before and after the show. - Donald.

I definitely should have had a small towel nearby. And I am not bashful about asking for a cold water if I am offered a drink while setting up. I try not to take a drink during the show, but I may re-think that decision in the future. This is my first summer doing kid's shows, so I am not used to sweating my butt off on stage in front of a bunch of kids!

Come the summer I will ditch my jacket and just wear a short sleeved shirt and waistcoat. This helps a lot. I also have a glass of water to hand.

Keep a hanky or hand towel as Donald suggested. And also, don't dress too hot...in the summer months you gotta come up with something that is cooler. Plenty of water as well!

I work a lot of outdoor shows and festivals and have come up with a few tips and suggestions that have worked great for me in the heat.
- Make sure to bring water and or sports drink with you. It is a MUST to keep hydrated when you are warm. As you perform your motuh also gets dry and you lose nutrients. Keep refreshed with water at all times. - I alter my costuming during the summer months. I have bought a short sleeve tux shirt that is actually very light weight as they are made for waiters and waitresses for outdoor functions. These shirts are light weight and keep me cool. I have several of them so I can always remain fresh as the others get dry cleaned. - I lose my jacket all-together in the summer months. There is no reason to where the jacket and make myself overheated. Just look professional but gear back how many layers you are actually wearing. - Keep a hand towel near you at all times. This is a great way to get sweat off of you during the show or between routines. - Even a small hand held fan can help you to stay cool before or after a show. Hope these ideas are helpful. Kyle

Don't worry about looking unprofessional when you are not wearing a jacket...I think most people would think you look just plain silly and strange wearing a tux or suit jacket in the hot sun.

I think comfort is even more important then looking like a million bucks. I mean we still need to look professional, but I think this can be accomplished with a short sleeve shirt and without having to wear a vest or a jacket along with it. For me, I usually wear a short sleeve banded collar tux shirt that is very light weight. I wear my tux pants, also more light weight then normal. I wear a broach over the tux shirt button and I am ready to go. It keeps me comfortable. Also, I forgot to mention that I always make sure to put on sun block before heading out to any outdoor show. I learned the hard way once and so I always make sure to put some on and bring it with me. Kyle

Well got this one from Mark Wade I think!
I bring a fan with me to every show winter and summer, I position it so that when I am standing in what I call my neutral position the fan is blowing a very nice breeze across my face, then when I need to perform something I take half a step forward or half a step back so the breeze does not effect the routine, you would be amazed at how much the fan helps, its not a huge fan either it just sits on the floor, I am creating a box to go around the fan that has a magic motif to it, just to give it that little extra(yes I use it out doors as well, you may want to get what is called a dust screen to put on the back so a bug doesn't get sucked in and shoot you in the face LOL)plus having the fan allows you to perform a really cool snowstorm in china! another thing that works well if your do multiple shows, they sell this cloth tube like thing,it looks like a draft stopper for doors, you soak it in cool water then wear it around your neck and it really does cool you off, I would not recommend wearing this while your performing especially if your using a lapel mike! and number 1 like all have been saying drink lots of water! the audience really is not going to have aproblem with you drinking water during the show(hey if your working a fair you might even have some one walking thru the crowd selling bottled water.....with your own label on it of course!

I wear a jacket year round (I have tattoos on my arms) but my shirt underneath is a short sleeve tux shirt. I made it myself with a pair of scissors.
Push the fluids is cardinal rule number one. I have found I am useless if I can't talk and there is nothing worse than a sore throat from straining dry vocal cords. I also carry a red bandana in my pocket at all times to wipe my sweat. On busy days, I carry several extra bandanas in my car and switch them out when I go to different shows. oliver |

I have found a pretty good source for short sleeve tux shirts at a very reasonable price. If anyone is intersted, please just PM me or e-mail me directly at:
magic4u02@aol.com I would be happy to share some of that information with you. I have used them many times for my festival work and the shirt material is also very light weight. Kyle

In the summer months I wear bowling shirts. They are colorful and loose-fitting. Most bowling shirt companies also offer custom printing on the shirts for a reasonable cost.

At times when I am in that situation, I include lota bowl in my show. I keep drinking the excess water.

I sweat profusely even in the winter. I never wear a jacket or tie, but rather a vest and always a short sleeve shirt. (kinda lends credit to "I don't have anything up my sleeves.")
I keep a supply of sweat towels, as I call them, in my suitcase table so I don't have to think about packing them. Sometimes I think I'm cursed, I sweat so much, but it runs in my family. My brother, mother and maternal grandfather all had/have the same issue. Also as mentioned, plenty of water.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Among the many sage suggestions my wife has given me it to wear an undershirt.
As a cyclist, I discovered the wonders of wicking material for shirts. Harris still 2 old to know it all
