I'm not talking about assemblies or larger venues, just traditional birthday, library shows... 30 or less.

You can save a bundle by buying in bulk and making up your own goodie bags. For example, check this page from Oriental Trading:
https://www.orientaltrading.com/deluxe-m......rd=magic You get 6 dozen tricks for $18.79. Put one trick into a plastic see-through goodie bag, add a magic wand, a few other cheap toys & novelties and some candy, a coloring page featuring your image, plus of course promo material with your contact info, and you’re all set! Nice giveaway for just a couple of bucks per bag. You can also up-sell these to birthday clients at a profit. |

Thanks, Arthur. I give EACH child a thingy... it's not something I include in the price of the package, so with 30 kids at 2 bucks a goodie bag, that's not something I can handle... although I WILL use this for the birthday child in those situations.

What I used to do is offer 10 free goodie bags as part of my birthday package. If there were more than 10 kids invited, clients were persuaded to add $5 for every extra goodie bag to my fee.

Hi Steve -
My typical giveaway for a show is a postcard. I've dubbed it an "Activity Postcard", because there is my photo and contact info on one side, and a couple of magic tricks printed on the back. I offer to autograph the postcard, which some children seem to like. I had a series of postcards designed for me a few years ago, and now I just pay to have them re-printed. I've printed them in batches of 1000 and also in batches of 5000, through companies like GotPrint. Obviously, the higher the volume, the less expensive per item. In bulk, they are less than 10 cents each Canadian, not including the initial fee for having the graphic designer create the cards for me. ---- For birthday shows, some of my show packages just include postcards and balloons for the kids, and some show packages also include other giveaways like my magic wands and magic kits (branded to me). These are some of the items I might sell BOR at certain other shows. - Donald

Hey, Donald...that's more along the line of what I'm asking for. I've been envious of your activity postcards, but I don't have the graphics resources to come up with my own. For the past several years I've been passing out custom wristbands. They've been a hit, but run about 30 cents each for the quantities I've been purchasing. Also include a sticker and my postcard (which I hope will end up in mom's hands, but find some scattered about the room after the shows.)
After all the threads, I still decided to go with Brad Ross' "Funny Money." What an experience that was (but that's another story for another time.) These will end up a little over 6 cents each, but whether they have the "staying power" of my wristbands remains to be seen. |

As I mentioned, I had my postcards done by a graphic designer (who also happened to be a magician). He customized the tricks and artwork for me.
However, if I was going to have a graphic designer copy and paste "instant author" artwork onto a teach-a-trick postcard, I would use one of these resources: http://thedeanofsuccess.com/abrakidabra/ http://www.abra-card-abra.com/products&prices.html https://barrymitchellproducts.com/produc......ng-cards http://coolmagicproducts.com/ https://www.mymagictips.com/product-category/marketing/ The ones from Ryan Pilling (MyMagicTips.com) are the lowest price. He offers several different products. Ryan did my custom artwork for me years ago, but is no longer doing custom projects. There were some other "instant author" / "teach a trick artwork" that used to exist, like the ones from Kevin Witt and from Mr. Greggy, but no longer seem to be on their websites. - Donald P.S. Did the wristband idea come from Christopher T. Magician (aka Christopher Barnes)?

Currently kids get a 4 x 6 postcard with a trick on it. Full colour both sides.
My last order (5000!) through Vistaprint worked out to 3.5¢ each including taxes and shipping. 20 kids at a birthday, 70¢. 100 kids at a library, $3.50. Very reasonable. btw, never pay full price at Vistaprint. They have sales all the time.

Good advice, Owen! In my performing days I used Vistaprint for all my promo materials, and use them even today for non-magic business cards.
