Even though I'm a chemist, I wasn't sure why the color changed, but someone posted a possible explanation (but I'm not sure).
Going in the other direction, take a penny and heat it up in a mixture of water, KOH, and something else that I forget, and you can get that penny to look like silver. But, that is not something that you would want to do in your house (I did this for a freshman lab expt)

I'm probably going to do this with a bunch of quarters just to have a bunch of copper quarters and the fun of having made them myself.

Wonder if it would work with the clad halves? When I saw ethanol and a torch I had visions of something going horribly wrong. Like the time I tried to start a wood stove with some dry gas...

I've used ethanol as a fuel for home made camp stoves for years. Luckily it goes out pretty easily. Exploding torch propane tanks otoh... well what's life without risk?
