How do you make a million dollars with magic? Start with two million… I know it has been mentioned on other threads about making money with magic.
I don’t agree with it at all. I strongly believe that magic and show business is one of the best businesses that you can be in. Both as a part time entertainer and as a full time entertainer. Let’s talk about part time making money. If you have a hobby and it is the remote control airplanes. A person can invest a good some of money into getting the different remote controls and different engines and airplanes. They can spend a lot of time building it and the first time it is taken out it crashes. It is quite a lot of money to replace it and the time to rebuild it. This is a hobby that costs money. And can cost them a lot of money before they learn to fly the plane. The thing that makes magic so great is that a magician can make money with it and then invest it back into the hobby of magic as we buy more magic. And enjoy having fun with magic. It is also fun to practice and fun to show people magic. So in effect it can and does make other people happy as well. And I feel as magicians we offer the public laughter and fun as sort of a public service in a small way. For people that just want to do it for fun and to make a little money it really isn’t that hard to find a place like a restaurant to do magic in. Or do birthday parties. And make a great income from your magic. To reinvest in our magic art. That is what is so great about it. You can make money with it as a semi pro and not have to really work that hard and have a second income and still have fun with it. If a magician decides to take it more seriously all they need to do is get out there and find more work. The same rules apply to both the semi pro and the professional when it comes to getting the work. And all that is to systematically get known and your name out there with the use of effective advertising. There are many books and tapes on the market today about marketing magic. Some offer advice on mail marketing/web site marketing. So in my viewpoint, magicians today have it great. They can get out there and make as much money as they want to make. And have fun with magic.

Glenn,
I was just wondering who your trying to convince? I think you're preaching to the choir here. I think all of these guys and gals, myself included, love what we do. That's why we do it. Edd

Edd,
You may be right in regards to some of us. However I still feel there are a lot out there that cringe and shy away from anyone really doing marketing and taking marketing ideas and really growing their magic business. I think it is at that level where there is a lot of difference. You get those that think marketing and magic do not mix and others who feel magic should never be a business at all. It is really a shame if you ask me but I hear bad things and negative vibes from people all the time just because I or someone else takes their magic seriosuly and really wants to make an effort to really grow it. It almost becomes that anyone who really markets their magic well can not possibly love magic. I know that can not be further from the truth, however those feelings do exists and are out there. Just my two cents worth on the topic. =) Kyle

Try to understand my point of view. Magic was a business in my family. My Dad was a hard showman. It was a way to put food on the table. Later our family got a magic shop and people would come in and tell us what a fun business we were in. Yes parts of it was fun but it was a whole lot of work as well. We also did magic conventions through the magic shop. I went to some of these conventions. But they were not fun - not that often because bringing in a dealer table has a lot of work to it. Plus when you're at the dealer table you miss a lot of the convention. The magicians often go to these conventions and they are on vacation having fun. Our family would go and it was a lot of work. When I go to a convention now I have a hard time relaxing because after years and years of it being work I get there and I feel that I am missing something. Also, when you do it as a hard business I found that you miss out on a lot of things that happen in magic. For example it is a easier doing magic when you feel like it than it is because it is Wednesday and it is 7 PM. I am in no way complaining - but I am trying to tell it like it was and is for me as I said - I can only speak for myself. It wasn't until about three years ago when I put my hypnosis show as my lead show - that I really started to enjoy doing magic again. Now I do magic mostly for fun. I still do shows but I also have the time to lecture and mix with more magicians now. Because my income is mostly from hypnosis shows. Parts of it is still a business but this has been the first time that I have enjoyed some of the fun in magic. Preaching to the choir? Perhaps - after all I am a Bishop.

Well it's good to hear some positive thoughts about how succesful you can become doing something you love.
It's discouraging to hear that you can't make a living doing magic. A pro at the Magic Castle suggested never to lose your day job so you can continue to have the health insurance benefits and steady income to pay the bills. Yes, it was advice with good intentions, but it does make you think, how successful are most magicians? Are they like the starving artists? |

Glenn, BRAVO Brother! Nicely spoke! Excitant offering! It's all TRUE what Glenn says! I see people make it in show business everyday with awesome success. It's NOT a rare as some would have us believe. We get to enjoy a killer lifestyle doing what we absolutely are impassioned to do... what about this doesn’t compute? This 100% available to anyone and everyone who is simply willing to what it takes to have what they want. YES. It really IS that simple! It may not be easy, but is certainly IS simple! Is it "work". (Oops, sorry for the four letter word!) SURE, ya' betcha’, but so is everything else worth having in life, right? ...and so it goes. Thanks again Glenn for a breath of fresh air and the honest to goodness truth from another brother hopping form stage to stage and living his dreams. Thanks for breathin'! Thank you for the kind words. As most of us know doing magic well and then making money for doing magic well takes added skills.
We all know there are a few tools that may be needed to make money with performance skills.

Glenn nice post.
Yes I agree after 35+ years of performing, most of it on a professional level, I agree it takes work as any job does and as Dean pointed out. If you choice to make performing your livelihood, it's like any other profession, it takes knowledge, skill a firm business background and a certain amount of luck. As does any profession, a doctor, lawyer, candle stick maker are all jobs. Is everyone destined to become a magic super star? Of course not. It is amazing just how many, however are performing on a regular basis all around the world, most are unknowns, most are making a living to doing very well. Bottom line, magic is a great hobby as Glenn said, magic can be a great job. But yes it is a job, and if you sit by the phone and wait for it to ring, you'll starve, the same as a plumber or any other professional who just sits and waits. Is it easy being a professional? NO! Is it fun? OH YES, as I always joke, It beats working for a living. Thanks Glenn... Rick |

Thank you for the great post Rick...
It is interesting that people today ask me "what is my day job" when I am at a show. Or at a magic club meeting. I agree it beats working for a living... And as Ken Brooks said... It beats digging roads...
