I have a Morgan Hopping Half set. The only problem with it is that the expanded shell randomly sticks to the copper coin, and then I am left at an awkward situation of not having an out that I know of. As a result, I am just using the Morgan dollar and its shell, and a Johnson copper that I can rely on.
Here is the question, is there anything I can do to the shell to make it un-shell each time? Either a spray or apply something to make it slide off? Or how do I know exactly where the catch is on the rim of the extended shell? Thanks... |

The shell's rim is probably just verrrrry slightly dented out of round (dropping it can cause this), causing the sticking problem.
One fix is to stand a cheap plastic Bic lighter upon the inner surface of the mouth-up shell, right up against the shell's rim, and work the lighter's curved body all the way around along the inner rim of the shell, to sort of "push back out" any tiny little (sometimes virtually invisible) dents or dings, restoring the shell's original roundness. (I think Todd Lassen came up with this method.) Another fix is to put a silk over the mouth-up shell, and then insert the regular coin, with the silk still there (between them). You can pop the shell out by pulling on the sides or corners of the silk. Doing this a few times can also open the shell back up to where it needs to be.

I've used Karnak's approach to fix one that someone ran over with an office chair. The only difference is that I used a dry erase marker, since it has a curve very similar to the inside wall of the shell.
The silk approach I've had less luck with. Depending on how the shell is dented, the shell and silk can get stuck. |

I put a small coin like a dime inside the larger shell and push it out while rolling it along the vertical axis. (it lies flat, parallel to the shell).
