Greetings Café members, I am the Saint in Scarlet.
I've been part of this world for around three years now and I think I might be here to stay. I've had a variety of different vocations in my life but none has drawn me in quite as much as this one. It encapsulates many skills I’ve picked up from similar places. Religion, Poetry, Stone Masonry, Lockpicking, Social Engineering, Psychology, Chemistry, Biology. For me, this journey started like many people, with old faithful. The trick deck of cards. Carried without the noblest of intentions, to get free drinks and phone numbers I cut my teeth on the night scene in my city. Bars, Clubs... some very out of hand lock-in parties. From there I realised that card “Magic” was not for me and soon moved into the more diverse branch of Mentalism. After messing around with Mentalism as a rather gimmicky social engineering concept and using it for some less than ethical "Rewards" I've now fallen into performing full time as my job and have rather quickly changed my opinion on what magic should and shouldn't be used for. I feel many people get into magic to feel more confident, to seem more interesting. To have every eye in the room on them and I'll be honest part of that is what originally pulled me in. However, I personally believe that this recourse and this drive is ultimately self-destructive. To be a good Magician (I really hate that word) you first have to be a good person. Not the other way around. Magic won't fix your life, not by itself. But it's useful. It is fundamentally good. When treated in the correct way, in balance with the rest of your life. Not placed a pedestal. Magic is a moment allowed, only a moment. Once that moment is over we must return to the real world. I look forward to meeting you all.
I don't need you to believe in me, I believe in you!

Welcome Thesaintinscarlet,
Sounds like you are evolving. You'd be surprised at how many Magicians use Magic to get phone #s (or maybe you wouldn't). Happy New Year! -Mary Mowder |
