I hope I'm posting this in the right place...
I've seen two versions of Compleat Magick, 4 vol set with black covers and 5 vol set with "cranberry" covers. I also found a reference to another 4 vol set printed in the 80's without much info about it. Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these three printings? I'm thinking about buying a set eventually, but not sure which is the better one. Clarification on advantages/disadvantages of one printing over the other would be tremendously appreciated. |

There's some controversy about this which can be found elsewhere.
Quite simply you want to go for the 5 volume set as it is actually complete. The four volume set (which I own) is missing all that can be found in volume 5. There was talk of making the 5th volume available to those who bought the 4 volume set but it never happened. |

Hi Ed,
Viking Magic has recently made available for separate purchase the Compiled Index which includes extra effects. I think this is the 5th volume you refer to. I can see it on their website now and I assume they are the same but I don't have it to confirm. So I think if you have the previously issued 4 volumes, you can buy this to make it complete. Absinthiste, In terms of differences between the black and the maroon versions, again just my assumption but don't believe there are any differences (unless they've fixed any typos or formatting errors), except the maroon version was issued as a complete 5-volume set and could not be purchased as separate volumes. The set from the 80s you mentioned might be the original paper loose leafs or leaflets, not the bound black-cover volumes. Sorry I have no concrete info but I'm sure someone else can confirm. I also read on here someone said not 100% of all the original leaflets were included in the bound edition. Brian |

I bought a second hand copy of Magick from a friend, the original newsletters and inserts in large binders. I feel like I own a little piece of history 😄

The description says it will work with the loose originals as well as the latest 5 volume set, so I'm not sure - I thought the 5 volume set already had an index, so why would you need another one? If it mentioned the 4 volume set that would make more sense. |

The cranberry 5-volume set is a facsimile (exact visual reprint) of the original issues. It does not have an index, but Andrew Pinard compiled one after publication and Viking printed it in matching format.
My understanding of the earlier 4-volume set is that it was an editorial attempt to organize the material by category, similar to Practical Mental Magic organizing selected material from the Jinx. It was to have a volume 5, which was never completed. The cranberry 5-volume set is the one to get. |

I appreciate everyone chiming in on this.
How is the index on the black version? |

Good index in the black version. Separate index per volume (at back) for title of trick, contributor and cumulative index for all volumes.

I recently purchased the 5-volume cranberry set from Collectors workshop and it came with a thin 6th book index, which I have found very useful
