Hi guys! I just released a new download on my site called You CAAN Do It. It's a collection of three ACAAN's that require ZERO MEMORIZATION are are completely IMPROMPTU. Here is the advertising blurb:
Quote:
The Any Card at Any Number, or ACAAN, plot is a classic of modern-day magic. A card and a number are both named, and mysteriously the selected card is at that selected position in the deck. You can pick it up directly from me here: http://www.justjoshinmagic.com/store/product/you-caan-do-it On the product page there is a full live performance of the advanced handling Soda CAAN using a borrowed deck. As always I'm here if you have any questions!

So no advanced sleights, no gimmicks, borrowed deck, no set-ups, can be done surrounded and repeated and it looks like it does in your video every time?

No advanced sleights, no gimmicks, deck can be borrowed with no set up (as you saw in the video) can be done surrounded, can be repeated (though personally I would then use one of the other methods just to mix methods). As for looking that every time, it will look either just like that or have a slight variation which still ends just as clean. I can’t really explain what it is you do, since it’s the core method, but I will say that it’s only a slight difference.

Recently began researching ACAAN And came across this video. Full of fun simple ideas and definitely worth the price.

Does the collection contain an actual ACAAN? You're advertising seems to imply this, but the demo is any "Selected" card at any number

Sorry for the confusion. The card can be freely named for all three versions. There are no forces involved.
I will update the description so it says the named card is found at the position, not the selected card.

Picked this up. As always with CAANs, these are not "the holy grail," and all have various tradeoffs, but as quick-and-easy impromptu CAAN effects, they all are workable and have some good ideas worth playing around with. There are a few fairly basic moves you need to know, but if you're doing card effects, you hopefully already know these.

Not sure about favorite handling yet. Want to play around with each and see what sticks... I think the first one, as is currently presented feels the weakest to me (and the easiest to backtrack), but still has plenty of potential with some fun presentational options. The last one seems scariest to do, but you explained it so clearly that I feel less scared about it (for those who don't have it: it's not actually scary at all once you see Josh's explanation -- but if you just described it upfront, you might think it's scary). But all three seem good. Will play around with them all and see if I can report back after some more experience.

I appreciate the feedback! And I'm glad you felt that the explanation was clear for Soda CAAN. I know that when you first hear it, it seems like a lot, but like I said I suck at the principle we use and if I can handle it, anyone can! I look forward to hearing which versions you get the most use out of!

I could find only three reviews on this download/trick so far (all quoted below).
Does anyone else have any firsthand impressions to share about this, or are there any other reviews to point us to? ========= Reviews of Josh Janousky's "You CAAN Do It" ========= "Recently began researching ACAAN And came across this video. Here are the main points David (Magic Orthodoxy) shares in his video review about the three ACAANs that are taught (summary in my words): Quote:
- JACAAN: Good, fast, simple, but so simple that spectators might catch it. I'd like to hear more about this last point - is knowledge about these sleights a pre-requisite? Does Josh teach these sleights, and what's the difficulty level of those? I'm especially wondering what this means for people who haven't previously come across or learned Garcia's Ego Force or Gerard's Extraordinary Proof before, which David mentions in his review as being needed to do this version. David, is there anything else you can say about the intermediate version (Yes We CAAN), besides the fact that it's good for strolling? It sounds the most promising, and was also the one Alex Hui was most positive about in his review. He also suggested that JACAAN was too easy to back track, and that the setup Soda CAAN wasn't really original while the impromptu Soda CAAN used an inelegant method. |

He teaches the ego force, which is a handy tool, and gives pointers for the others (in some cases to free videos, and in some cases to paid ones -- but almost everything that he doesn't directly teach can be learned pretty quickly with some practice and random YouTube vids).
I agree that Yes We CAAN is probably the best overall. Quick, impromptu and covers all the bases, but will require some practice. Not so difficult, but needs practice to make it look smooth. If you're handy with cards already, shouldn't be a problem. If you're not as handy, you'll need some practice. I wouldn't say it's difficult, even for those without card skills, but it's something you should practice a few times to make sure you're comfortable with the moves. |
