INTRO My name is Braden Carlisle and thank you for tuning in to another episode of “You know the deal, let’s look at some magic” WHAT IS IT Omega is a card trick by magician Max Major. It’s a very good card trick, though! Here’s the ad copy from Theory 11. Instantly know the exact card your spectator cut to, without ever touching the deck. You give the spectator a deck of cards - and ask them to spread through it to make sure all of the cards are different. They can even shuffle the deck! You ask them to cut the cards wherever they want - and remember the card. WHAT YOU GET You will receive a gimmicked deck that you need in order to perform Omega. A link and password to the online tutorial is also printed on the packaging. QUALITY OF THE PROPS It is a deck of cards printed on Bicycle stock and treated with a secret formula so that they do the thing they’re supposed to do, and they do it very well. I’ve been playing around with it for a few days, and have performed it for my housemates. It does what it is supposed to do well. It’s a well gimmicked deck of cards! QUALITY OF TEACHING The effect is well explained and demonstrated by Max Major himself in the tutorial video. The video itself is 39 minutes and 50 seconds long. It’s shot in a studio with very clear audio and video. I never had trouble understanding anything. The deck is explained in detail, then the video cuts to a previously filmed uncut performance of the routine in the real world. The video comes back for a more in depth explanation of method and tips. There are also other ways to perform the routine that are explained, and even one routine that uses three decks for the stage instead of close up. DIFFICULTY Mechanically, this is one of the easiest routines you can perform, as you never touch the cards. Performance wise, you have to be comfortable controlling the actions of spectators, as you are placing a very gimmicked deck into their hands. I didn’t have any problems, and I don’t expect to have any problems, but you should be aware that you do need a bit of confidence in what you’re doing. ANGLES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS There are no special angles or clothing requirements or anything of the kind. WHO IS THIS FOR In my opinion, Max Major has created an excellent walk around trick. I can have this deck, put it away, perform something else, and bring out another deck. No complicated deck switch in a close up show, though it would have a fantastic spot in a close up show as well. I perform mainly parlour and stand up shows, and Max presented a great idea on how to incorporate it there. I may try it out, but this routine fits my persona better during walk around than when I’m on the stage. It’s a great routine, though. I think it has a different role depending on the environment you perform it in, but I would say it works in most situations. PROS The reactions I’m getting are bonkers. Also, the fact that at no point in the routine do you actually have to touch the cards. The spectators can look through the deck AND shuffle the cards. Then they cut wherever they want and you still know the card they choose. The last point is it’s a versatile effect. It’s mind reading or prediction. It can also be close up or stand up. CONS It’s a one trick deck. I don’t think that’s too bad. The invisible deck, or CardToon are both one trick decks, but the effects are so good that they justify it, and I believe Omega does that as well. ADDRESSING NEGATIVE COMMENTS I’ve read some negative comments about this effect, and I don’t agree with them. Most people are saying that this is a $40 deck of cards that you can get for $5 or $10. I disagree. There is a similar deck that you can get for that price, but you have to do most of the dirty work. The spectator can’t examine the cards, and they certainly can’t spread the deck for themselves. In my own opinion, the fact that I don’t have to touch the deck and I can freely give the cards to the spectator more than justifies that extra price. I do think you'd feel this way if you're more into the secrets than the actual performance or effect of this trick. For professionals, we’re not looking at the secret, we’re looking at the end product. FINAL VERDICT I would be happy to give my official recommendation to Omega. It’s a fantastic effect. The reactions I’m getting are bonkers. I’ll be officially putting this into my walk around repertoire. |
