Hello everyone, I’m in the process of trying to add some bizarre “artifacts” to my collection and in doing research to find the right fit for me one of the things I’ve come across is the haunted key effect....
I’m most interested in props that open up a window of presentations and effects, utility props if you will, something that can stimulate creativity and work in a variety of situations. The few purchases I’ve made thus far have been INCREDIBLE and I’ll be reviewing them and posting my thoughts here in a few days but for now I have a question about the haunted key...(side note, if anyone has recommendations to other props or creations or want to sell something they don’t use I’d be more than happy to hear from you!). My question is thus: when I was a beginner in magic I like many others received the “basic” haunted key made of a cheap metal and balanced to do the turning effect. I don’t remember much from my kid magic days but I do recall that key bring absolutely see through in methodology, anyone who handled it could figure it out and I instantly wrote it off as unusable, now over a decade later with working experience under my belt I’ve stumbled across two very interesting pieces, the resurrection cemetery key, and the Paul prater key. Now that I’m older and more experienced I’m whole heartedly convinced I could make the key play better than I could back then, but my question is are these “premium” or high end keys more fooling by design? Or do they just look the part better and not like some cheap magic key...does the professional grade construction garner any kind of functioning benefit or is it all just presentation? I don’t want exposure but I’m especially curious how the resurrection key can claim in its advert that spectators can’t get the key to turn until you’re ready for it too, thus leading me to wonder if these keys do enable a more convincing handling... I’d love any and all input in terms of the keys or any other props you guys love that fit my aforementioned criteria. Thank you all for your time! |

The Resurrection key looks like a real skeleton key for sure. Pretty sure I could find similar ones in the antique shops around here. They also have a really nice balance that allows for very slow, subtle, and deliberate movement.

Depending on your premise and your story, the appearance of the key matters. You likely want an old, or an old looking, skeleton key. The Resurrection Cemetery key is outstanding, though I often prefer a larger key. Look around, the internet and you will find some good classic-looking keys.
Regarding method, of course relying on gravity is obvious, but reliance on ideomotor action is NOT. See Drury's book Key Mysteries if you want to know much more. George |
