Hi gang,
The description of the overhand shuffle position in RRTCM reads in part..." the little finger curls inwards so that its side rests against the inner end and the thumb rests on the top card, its tip near the middle of the outer end." However, the accompanying illustration almost looks as if the little finger not only rests on the inner end but slightly wraps around the short side of the deck in an effort to further secure the cards. Should the little finger wrap around or should it merely rest on the back of the card, like the middle and ring fingers? Hopefully, that makes sense? Any help is greatly appreciated. |

I am a newbie myself. But I would say that perhaps you are overthinking it, although doing so is understandable. If your little finger effectively holds the cards in register it should not make a difference if your finger wraps around the end or not. Sometimes these kind of instructions have to be played with so as to adapt to one's own comfort zone.

Thanks for the reply Ted, I appreciate it. I suspect you may be right in regards to overanalyzing the hand position. It's a bad habit I've picked up with sleights. It could be my undoing. lol
As you said, I think it's wise to play around with the handling so it's comfortable (yet effective) for the individual. Thanks again for the feedback. |

Hi Scott25,
how are you coming along with the Royal Road to Card Magic, overhand shuffle? As you know, there are quite a few adaptations ... My favourite has to be keeping the whole deck in order. |

I don't have a copy of RRTCM to hand - but it sounds to me like this is a description of the LEFT hand?
With the deck in your right hand, you pull blocks of cards off with your left hand using your left thumb on the backs of the cards. Your index, middle & ring fingers are on the face of the cards (assuming the faces are to the right). Your left little finger is folded towards your (left)palm. It is NOT on the face with the other fingers. The folded little finger creates a guide for the cards to rest against. Don't think of it as the finger resting against the cards - it is the other way round, the cards rest against the finger. (Your finger doesn't need anything to "rest" itself against). It is not possible for the tip of the finger to wrap around the end of the cards - it would need to bend sideways to do that! Sounds like the drawing is a bit misleading. I can remember having to re-learn how to do the overhand shuffle, because it was different from what I had been doing for all my life as a layman. The little finger position felt really weird at first. After a while it becomes normal. Also I used to "throw" the cards from my right hand into my left - so pulling them with my thumb was really strange at first. |
