Please excuse my obvious ignorance on this topic! I have searched and found a lot of information here on the Café about materials for and methods for creating shim cards, but I have no idea how they are used in any effects. I admit, if I lack enough imagination to figure out a use for them I should probably get a different hobby! Nevertheless, if someone can point me to a source for how they are used in specific effects I'd be appreciative.

I've seen it used in Johnsons Magna Coin Box routine.

Chinatown Half uses a shim card. Several versions of Matrix use magnetic coins and shim card. Mostly used in conjunction with a magnetic coin or coins.

Chinatown Half does? Or might you be thinking of Steve Dusheck’s Lethal Tender?
Other effects that come to mind using shimmed cards include Duo Tech II and Johnson’s Visual Coin Penetration.

Ive done a couple of things with a shimmed
1 - put a magnet in the bottom of a small rubber chicken and used it as my “assistant” to find the card. 2 - had a card selected and returned to the deck, threw the deck into a bag and shook it up, had a small magnet in my hand, stuck my hand in the bag and found the card These are silly tricks that I played up mostly for laughs. You have to be careful with a shimmed card, its a bit thicker so a spec might be able to tell. |
