Social Distancing is going to have an impact on all magic performances, close-up probably the hardest hit.
Coin effects require or utilize spectator hands more than any other venue - now lost! A quick accounting has me realize more than 90% of my coin effects involve touching by a spectator(s)! About half have some magic occur in their hands, other just using their hand as a container or assistant. They all serve as witness of the actions for those further back in the audience. Some act as referee's. My spectator usage is high than most because I prefer to have the coins I use in an effect selected by a spectator and handed to me. Typically, basket is passed around an I either perform with an offered object, or I request a coin(s) of a certain type. "I could use a brown coin - yes, That English Penny would be fine. Now see if you can find a silver coin about the same size. A half dollar, perfect. For more international flavor, see if there is a Chinese coin - one with hole in it. Blue - yes, that seems about the same size as the others. Please hand those to me." What has occurred is that they have raised the level of certainly for the audience from suspicion to complete trust or certitude: a) the coins are natural, unprepared, solid and distinct. b) the count of three and only three coins in play is verified. They now do not "believe" these factors to be true, they "know" they are true. Alas - this can no longer happen! Sure, I can use other containers instead of their hand in effects - still astonishing but less "must be magic." But, how do I now establish the level of knowing trust? A question for all conjurors and mentalists too. If I now set that basket or plate on the table, how do I convince the observers of the two essential factors a&b above? Do I accept the lessening of impact or astonishment of my future presentations, or find a new way of establishing trust? There is always C&B and rope effects. Sigh!
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
