Good point. It could be that that's who has the the dies, and they just unethically used them to make more, and just didn't "obtain" them from elsewhere. Or there was a third party involved and at fault. I'm not sure where Oliver falls, then, in terms of culpability if they legitimately didn't know. Though that's likely not the case, either.

My understanding is that the person/company who was paid to manufacture dyes used to create the coins designed by Meir, unethically used the dyes (which belong to Meir) to manufacture additional coin sets for Lion Miracle (Oliver Magic). Those coin sets which are illegal knockoffs are made of different metals and have been put on the marketplace for sale. Of course Lion knew. They either approached the maker, or the maker approached them. Either way, both are guilty of ripping off Meir. What's not to understand. It was a shady deal. But in China they rip off a lot of magic items. My DVDs as well as DVDs of many other magicians are illegally being duplicated and sold (as well as downloads ) in China, and there are many other tricks that have been ripped off and duplicated for sale. Sometimes the product is cheaply made and sometimes the product is an exact counterfeit. This process takes money out of the pocket of the creator.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

I think the confusion stems from the phrase "Oliver Magic unethically obtained and used the dies".
Assuming the manufacturing company (call them MC, for short) is the one in possession of the dies - having manufactured the coins for Meir, then it's most likely the case that MC used the dies unethically, selling the items to Oliver. If that's the case, then MC didn't "obtain them unethically", and Oliver neither obtained or used the dies, just the illegitimate product. Which is what you suggest later. And I don't deny that Oliver _probably_ knew, but it is possible that they didn't - if M approached them and lied about it - not that it in any way diminishes the shadyness of what happened. I don't have enough information at the moment. It's also entirely possible that MC truly did own the dies - I believe ownership is part of the contract when creating them, and I haven't seen the terms of this one - which still makes the additional use unethical, but technically legitimate. Still not something I'd want to support. |

I don't think this should be the discussion here. But Meir is getting it taken care of. He originally hired one guy, who farmed the work out to someone else since he couldn't do it himself. That second company farmed it out to a third company who was unscrupulous and made unauthorized cheap sets. They were originally sold to a major distributor here, but that was nipped in the bud. The company with the dies also sold to chinese companies (who don't give a hoot that they are ripped off), and they sell them on chinese websites. But Meir will get that stopped as well. The company who decided to make some extra cash (and make NO mistake, the design is Meir's and he paid for those dies so they could make the coins) has been caught red handed. That is the last I will say about that.
The official coins sold by Meir are beautiful, with a perfect shell. If you are interested, you can find them here: https://www.mymagic.com/p/mymagic/japanese-coins-shell-set
