Hi,

Background: I had purchased a very nice "Attractive Flapper" Walking Liberty coin from the marketplace here, but it came without a shimmed "Inflated Carapace". I obtained a matching carapace and now need to install a shim (for OxyClean).
I tried using .0015" stainless steel shim material, but the gaff splits apart when I do a coin roll. It does stick to the coin if I lightly toss it from hand to hand.
I did a Café search on this topic and one member commented that shim thickness should not exceed .003", however, that was in reference to shimming a card. I suspect that .0015" is just too thin.

Should I try using .002"? .003"? I don't want to keep buying shim material on guesses.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Shouldn't use stainless steel; it has little or no ferromagnetic properties. Use carbon steel.

There are thin metal strips inside the "security tags" often found attached to DVDs, CDs, and other items in stores.
They're extremely thin and work great for shimming things.

I used these to change my original (not deluxe) Double Deception "attractive flapper" into an attractively locking one.

Douglas get yourself one of these. Comes in handy. Easy to cut, and cheap for shims...

or better yet, half the price on Amazon...

Do a search on ebay for "Iron Foil". It comes in all different gauges, that's where we get ours from and one small roll
will last you quite some time. It's good for cards, coin or anything you want to shim.

I searched on eBay and bought some "Iron Foil". Turns out that is only what it is called. It is simply aluminum foil with an "iron" name. It isn't magnetic!

Still looking for reasonably priced shim material for gimmicking cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about this? get a magnet and find some steel that is strongly attracted. File off some filings onto some newspaper, etc. on a tabletop. Glue the cards up and put the filings somewhat evenly on one of the glued cards. join them, press them, and you have a magnetic card without a solid shim!

Pardon me for adding this. most shim metal is made to be nonmagnetic or only slightly magnetic. Why? you don't want a normal shim metal piece to be magnetic. That is why it can be tricky if you are looking to buy shim stock that is very magnetic, the only kind that will work well in a tiny amount.
