No issue, Bob. You can get Fatima to cast the spell, while the Genie channels mana (magical energy) to her. Regardless of who casts the spell, the Spectator is still required to wave the Joker Card at the Deck. Please be reminded that you are the Director. You can influence the Spectator's lines.
Alternatively, you may get the Alice of Wonderland playing cards and have the Genie's role replaced by the Rabbit. The story plot remains almost the same. |

Interesting, Sam. I'm not sure this is quite what you meant by "Director," but it made me think that the spectator could be the casting director for a play that I was directing. With some Spectator cuts to the aces effect, the casting director could choose exactly the right cards to play the four non-genii roles. Then another spectator could play the genii, as you suggest, and I could supply them with their lines.
I haven't read the Alice books in a long time, but I agree there are all kinds of possibilities for magic there. By the way, are you familiar with The Annotated Alice, by Martin Gardner? Gardner is well-known among magicians as a creator of ingenious tricks, but he also beautifully annotated classic novels, wrote about science, wrote the Mathematical Games column in Scientific American, and on and on. Ha! This conversation is fun! Bob |

Hi Bob,
I think the spectator might be a bit oversensitive if she thinks the Fatima story has the influence of gender stereotype. The easiest way-out is to adapt the story of Aladdin and the Magic Lamp because it is one of the best known tales. The card box can serve as the Magic Lamp and a Joker Card (Genie) is inserted in the box. You can put a Magic Lamp sticker on the card box. This approach, you won't need to learn a color change or the Magic Slap to produce the Genie. |

Thanks, Sam. I love all the ideas you're coming up with. I have to admit, though, that I want to make my Fatima story work. I think it's okay as long as Fatima casts the spell.
See you, Bob |

Hi Bob,
I'm afraid to tell you that my ideas are exhausted. If you really want to make the female character (Fatima) to be "magically rescued" by the male character (Genie), through teaching a spell to her, so that she can cast Genie's spell to "physically free" herself, without the Spectator seeing this as a gender stereotype/discrimination, then you probably need a different handling. Today I searched on Denis Behr's Conjuring Archive and came across an effect titled, "Sandwich Transposition" published in Jerry Sadowitz's Cut Controls. Regrettably, I don't have the book, but I think you can check with The Magic Researcher, Phil Lawson. Perhaps he is able to present a picture of Sadowitz's handling that puts the top card with a sandwiched card in center. This may mitigate your stereotypical concern through the cooperation between the two characters. |

Hi Sam,
I really appreciate all the time you've put into this. Whether or not I end up using them, your ideas have inspired me. I have found, in my mathematical work, that nothing is wasted: an idea that I have for one research problem, but which doesn't work, or reading that was ultimately fruitless in solving that problem, always seems to play a role of some kind later in some other project. I have no doubt that the same is true in magic, and that the time you've spent working with me has not been wasted. At the *very* least, it was worthwhile because I enjoyed our conversation. Thanks again for your kindness, and I hope to *see* you again on the Café. Best Regards, Bob |

I meant the asterisks around "see" to be quotes.
