In this routine -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4gH6SmA5dw -- Terry Elton uses a Square Circle where the outer box is hinged and comes open to display it empty.
Does anyone know if this type of Square Circle was made and marketed by a specific magic manufacturer ? I wonder if it is a custom-made item that Terry Elton made himself or had made for him ? I'm not asking about the routine that Terry Elton is doing with it (that's his original routine) I'm just asking about whether this type of Square Circle with the hinged box was something that was commercially available and who made it. |

David, this was manufactured by Ken Reedy Magic around 2004 and was priced at $219. I've owned and performed it since then. Being able to open it up is very convincing. It comes with a base with small nubs on the on it so the box is perfectly centered when replaced. Terry is using it flat on his table but it comes with 4 legs that raises it up about 6". The load capacity is huge. I produce 12 24" silks and then a 100' streamer and the tube is only about 3/4 full. It has a unique feature that allows you to pick up the tube as a finale and produce something like a feather botania or other large item. I don't know if they are still available or not.

Thank you very much, Dave ! I appreciate you pointing me to the source. Even if he's not still making them I know what to search for on the Used Magic sites.

Interesting sidenote: There's often discussion around Fred Haenchen or Louis Histed being the first to apply the theatre principle of Black Art to magician's apparatus. The dates are very close 1930-1931. Haenchen was making Magic for himself and others many years before this.
I mention this here because I do know that Fred Haenchen created a prop he dubbed the Haenchen Triangular Production Mystery. (I do not know the specific time period when this was produced.) This set consists of a wooden flat base, a round decorative tube, a slightly smaller black inner load tube and a 3-fold wooden triangular "screen" with cut-outs that fits around the decorative tube. The routined handling of the props is very clever and the hinged triangle tube contributes strongly to the impression that nothing can be concealed. I hope this is of interest to you... Julie |

The Mark Wilson Allakazam Hat also has this effective feature of hinging open , which I think makes a very convincing display.

What is interesting about this feature psychologically, is that it almost leads the spectator into thinking that the outer box is more important than it actually is. Which ultimately, adds to the mystery of the production.

The really clever handling of the Haenchen set allows the clearly "empty" tube to be set upright on top of the flat base (like a tray) which is cleanly laid across the top of the now empty triangle-shaped "cabinet". The triangle with the flat board across the top and the empty tube on top of that gives the appearance of a small table with the tube on top. The production is made from the tube alone. I don't imagine this would be difficult to make... Julie |

There is even a Speed Demo of it so you can see it in action. A really nice idea and certainly more advanced than the standard Square Circle.

On a side note, does anyone know if a builder has made a Square Circle where after the main load is revealed the outer box can produce a second load, and the inner tube a third? Perhaps the outer box could be a variation of the See Through Production Screen http://funtimemagic.com/see-through-production-screen and the inner tube a Phantom Production Tube? In other words after the initial load is revealed, the outer box is removed and shown empty, and from it, a second load is removed. It's then placed back over the inner tube and the inner tube is then removed, shown empty, and a third load is removed to finish the routine. It may be a dumb idea, and too much of a good thing. Just wondering.

Although the Haenchen Production Box uses Black Art, there are differences. It uses a square inner box instead of the inner tube. The square box is shown to have a bottom. I think the load might be smaller than the tube version?

I didn't say it "collapses" just that it packs flat. Though I'm not sure if there is much difference in this context? Here are the other Square Circles I have on my site, but I don't see anything else like the one you describe :-( Though this one really maximized the load by using the container that holds the load as a final load itself as a cage with bird to be produced at the end. andy

You are correct the load chamber is about half the size. But that's what comes with the more convincing display of being empty. It also came in four different sizes all the way up to Haenchen’s Illusion Production Box which was big enough to produce a girl! andy

I had forgotten about Haenchen's Production Box. We have a small one in our Collection. It's very deceptive under almost any conditions and practical, too. I had also forgotten that each--The Production Box and The Triangle Tube--was available in a variety of sizes. Thanks Andy et al.
