FINALLY a magician who has the same problem as me.
Eh dude, I have the same problem here. There's this video at http://www.ellusionist.com called Kard Klub Underground. It teaches the presentation, art and showmanship of magic and it also teaches killer misdirection. The trick they use the whole video is the two card monte since it's ideal for misdirection. I'm getting it in a few months. I think you better check it too. Here's a link. http://www.ellusionist.com/order/Kard.Klub/Kard_Klub1.htm |

Have a second spec cover the first specs hand with the card. You may also ask the spec to put it at the back of the specs hand (palm parallel to the floor) provided it is not windy. Or just ask them to cover it with their other hand.
Another point is to be likeable. Though it is a con trick I suggest making it magical. That way the audience would look foreward to the grand ending and not ruin it mid way. cheers ! Rannie

I do this by having the spectator put his finger on the back of the card, preferably on a table. that takes care of that. also if you present it properly, and patter correctly, it will never happen. I have never had it happen. timing is critical, and keeping your spectators attention diverted is crucial.
Also have them just pinch the cards like blaine does in street magic. make sure you emphasize the terms "without looking" what would you bet? blaine did this great in my opinion. they will take it as a challenge, and they want to make you think they don't have to look, and they got you. then they are in for a big surprise.

David Blaine hasn't done a 2 card monte on television. At least not that I've seen.

"The magician shows the spectator, the queen of diamonds on top of the deck.
He then tells the spectator to hold the queen, face down between his fingers. The performer then shows the next top card, the other red queen. After several fast sneaky switches of the cards, the spectator is told to guess which card is where ? When he turns over his hand, he realises he is holding no queens at all but two Aces." Blaine did this for a bunch of ppl through out his specials. first with emmitt smith I think, and later with the group of african americans. "bingo bango" if you did not him do 2 card monte, you have not watched street magic, or any of his specials very closely.

It has "earned" this name over the years. Well let me ask you, are you a performer or a legal consultant? personally I am a performer, to "be honest"(pun intended) I really don't care what the official name is, I just perform it. I know that the gimmicked version is the original 2 card monte. seems as though a lot of so called entertainers are getting way too caught up in cooperate greed, then actually having fun, and performing magic.
I would also like to thank you for your your exteme wealth of knowledge of magic's originators/creators. however I did not create the term for the effect, but almost the entire world wide web did I guess. you may also want to thank them. try a search and see what you get for two card monte. 2 card monte is what the majority call this effect, so if that bothers you there is nothing I can do about it. also just because someone copyrights an effect first, does not mean that someone else never thought of it also. I guess I will have to careful what I call my effects from now on, as someone may hear it is the wrong credential, and get upset.

I used to "correct" any poster who confused "Fechter's Be Honest-What is It?" with "David Blaine's 2 card monte".
But now I getting tired of it. To most of these posters, the history of Magic started with Blaine, and the truly GREAT personalities of Magic means nothing to them. If some of them could only read a book from time to time, instead of insisting on learning from video/DVD! Bjørn

No one should be into magic for any length of time and not know about Eddie Fechter. The serious student can easily absorb this kind of information as learning the history of magic is fun. I feel that knowing the real name of this trick is very, very important. You see while Blaine is making millions because of the trick Eddie Fechter's family gets nothing. The memory of Eddie should come alive every single time someone performs his miracle with the cards and if no one even knows who he is then I believe this won't ever happen.
Please purchase The Magic of Eddie Fechter if you want to learn some history and fantastic magic. One should spend as much time learning history as sleights. Then you will realize that there is nothing new under the sun, and you have not originated anything!

I guess I'll speak now...
Knowing the history of "Be Honest, What Is It?" will have nothing to do with your ability to perform the effect. Absolutely nothing. Studying the history of any effect has no effect on being able to perform it, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool... it just doesn't make any sense, there is no logical reasoning behind the idea. According to Roberto Giobbi, the only way to fully appreciate magic is through a study of its history, and I will agree with that. It reminds me of my country... I appreciate what I have now because of what my forefathers have done before me. There is a logical connection between knowing the history of something and appreciating it. For instance, when I read the opening pages of Expert at the Card Table, I feel a deeper appreciation for card magic. However, when it comes to presenting magic, historical knowledge has a very mild influence. I'm reminded of an essay from Eugene Burger's Mastering the Art of Magic titled "A Conversation in Hell." In it, an amateur keeps insisting that a professional magician demonstrate his side steal, which he does. Afterwards, the amateur tells him to do it again while he watches from the bottom, and tells him to do it very slowly. The magician complies, and the amateur yells out "That's not original! That was published by so-and-so by Fabio in 1964, and several variations have been published." The professional magician simply replies "I didn't know that. It's what I've always used, and I'm going to keep using it." The amateur was overly concerned with methods and history, while the magician is only concerned with entertaining his audience... that is his job after all. Ken Weber's Maximum Entertainment comes to mind as well. Your audience doesn't care who created the tricks or the methods, and they don't care how difficult the method is or whether or not David Blaine caused millions of teenagers to rename the effect, all they care about is being entertained. In other words, your spectators don't give a *** whether it's "2 Card Monte" or "Be Honest, What Is It?" They don't care that Fechter was the originator and Blaine made it popular. If history is your concern, let it be your concern. I know what my concern is, and that's entertaining my spectators. I thank God that I realized what my concerns should be before I got too far along and forgot what's really important. Don't get me wrong... I do disagree with the renaming of effects, and I think Brad Christian should be tarred and feathered. But that isn't the point. So if you think you should spend the same amount of time learning history as you should on your sleights, then you won't have much time to learn how to perform, and as magicians, this should be our primary concern. Even if it is Fechter's effect, it is your job to put yourself into the magic and make it your effect, and more importantly, it is your job to entertain your spectators rather than waste time in magical history arguments. That is all. Come to think of it, I'd like to elaborate on my post a little more. I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression... magic history is important in it's own right. In one of my presentations, I talk about S.W. Erdnase, a famous card cheat who still sits in on every poker game, watching and waiting for someone to make their move. The idea for the presentation came from the following thinking: If Dai Vernon were watching me now, what would he be thinking? If Vernon could see free tutorials spread all over the internet, and the masked magician exposing our secrets, what would he do? I have a deep appreciation for the work of those who came before me... so it inspires me to become a better performer, and to perform magic as it is meant to be performed... but inspiration doesn't equal success unless you act on it. I know how each of you feel about Fechter's effect. It's the same way you should feel when you see kids out there performing but not practicing, and see instant downloads available that are traded for free among new magicians... I always knew that such things were wrong, but I never felt as strongly about them until I learned some history. I hope that clears things up... I had a feeling I would be criticized for implying that history was worthless. History is there to inspire us, but it's up to us to take magic into our own hands and perform it as ourselves... no one wants a second rate Blaine OR Fechter. |
