My wife and I drove from Texas thru New Mexico and Arizona and back last fall and LOVED it.
We're planning on doing another driving vacation this summer, and are considering 2 paths, east and north. The idea is to see as many interesting things as we can along the way: - North (either thru OK, KS, & NE, or a semi-circle thru CO & WY), on to Mount Rushmore, and then carrying on into North Dakota and/or MN is possible. We could always jaunt into other states to the east or west along the way. - East, with New Orleans likely being the main city, then going through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, maybe Florida (we once drove through St. Augustine, FL and I vowed to return, someday). While seeing 'main attractions' along the way, we also love stopping by the fun, or less-known places. For example, we took a 2-hour detour to go to Pistachioland in NM! We like: - natural wonders & scenic views - offbeat museums - old, historic homes - rock & mineral stores - historic sites - off-beat/historic/interesting restaurants We'll read the guidebooks, but maybe you've got some suggestions on lesser-known places to visit, or tips on visiting more well-known places? We'd love to hear!

My goodness, no, Arthur! We had a marvelous time in early November last year. We drove all over New Mexico and Arizona, went down into the Caverns, ate at any restaurant we chose. Everywhere we went was open but often masks were required. Plus, my wife and I are now fully vaccinated.
Last year, New Mexico had a restriction that visitors had to self-quarantine for a time upon arrival. The hotel had a sign that said (paraphrasing) "But remember, we don't know where you came from and when you arrived in NM!" LOL. EDIT: just double-checked the states we're looking at - no restrictions that would affect us.

Missouri. Branson Missouri specifically.
30 miles north is where Wild Bill Hickok has the one stand in the street and draw spirit. Every western features one and this was the only one recorded in Springfield Missouri. Lots of Jessie James stuff near and through here and the lake are amazing. Plus my really cool close up show, just sayin. Also a great toy museum and new aquarium.

Probably not a good driving destination for you, but a fantastic one stop vacation spot that would meet all of your interests. Of course you would have to cross the Canadian border to really enjoy it. It is Niagara Falls and the surrounding area.

If you go north into Nebraska, perhaps on way to Mt. Rushmore. In northwest corner of the state is an old Army Fort, now a state park: Ft. Robsnson,
Beautiful drive off main interstate, and the fort is beautiful. You can stay in old barracks, or splurge a bit like we did and get an officer's house. We stayed in cabin reported to have been Dr. Walter Reed's house. They have hayrides, campfires, and sing alongs. We had best time there. http://outdoornebraska.gov/fortrobinson/

A few years ago a friend and I drove East from his house near Seattle. He wanted to see the Battle of the Little Bighorn Battlefield in SE Montana and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, WY. One of the places we stayed was the Irma Hotel in Cody, which was named after Buffalo Bill's daughter and is supposedly haunted; they also have a bar/restaurant and had an outdoor "shoot-out" in the afternoons. We then drove back thru Salt Lake City and to the SF Bay Area where he dropped me off.
It was a fun trip, although I still smile when I think we drove a day and a half East to see the Old West. If you go North thru Kansas maybe you can stop at Stevens Magic in Wichita. Don't now if they're open to visitors now, but it may be worth a try.

Thanks, George! We'll look into Cody!
As my wife and I have thought and planned, we're now looking at flying to Denver, and renting a car and exploring north as far as Ft. Collins and south as far as Colorado Springs, then a night or 2 in Vail. Then, on to SLC to explore northern Utah for a few days. Then drive across southern Wyoming on our way to North Dakota and Mt. Rushmore. One thing we've learned is that there's more to see and explore in ND than we thought! From their back to Denver, and then fly home. 2 days of driving (each way) to and from Denver, where the starting point of our vacation really begins, cost too much time. Flying to Denver will give us some more time to see what we're vacationing to see.

I will say that in my experience there is ALWAYS more to see than you think in just about anywhere in the country.
While I am past doing it now, headlining comedy clubs for about a decade gave me a chance to get through so much of what we have in this country and be able to spend the time to see it right. Alaska is an amazing experience. But really looking for things to do along the way while you are doing something else is a true joy.

Interesting - though I 'knew' your second sentence was true, there was something odd about never having put that thought into words, myself. I'm glad you did, and I'm glad I read it. We're doing an Alaska cruise next summer. Just the tip of the iceberg, but maybe more there will come later.

Good luck with your trip. It sounds like it'll be a lot of fun and a nice distraction from what's going on.
