Hi friends
Can you recommend some books that deal in depth with how to develop your main character effectively? |

The essays in the books Mitox and Yokai by Phill Smith deal with premise and character. I found both works extremely helpful. Some nice material in those pages as well.

For me, Carissa Hendrix has done a superb job creating a character. She appears to have gone from a typical performance style to one which is unique and highly entertaining.
She has even developed a wig and clothes which matches her character perfectly. Perhaps you will agree that it is a bit rare to see a magician go from what I would call a typical ordinary presence to one which has a life of its own and quite entertaining. In essence, the audience gets an entertaining humorous character and a selection of good magic to accompany her personality performance. She figured it out extremely well! Anyway, perhaps in addition to a book, you may want to study videos of Carissa, both before and after here new character development to see what she has done. |

I haven't read this, but it has a section on character development.
https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic-......-lenert/ I have read these but it was long enough ago I don't remember what Pop covered as far as character development. They're worth reading though. https://www.popsmagic.com/store/p78/Crea......opy.html https://www.popsmagic.com/store/p79/Acti......opy.html -Brian |

For me, character is the most powerful performance tool in the toolkit. It's also the most dangerous one to *consciously* deploy until you've performed for lots of different types of audience.
One of my favourite quotes about character development is by Eugene Burger: "The potter works by building up, and the sculptor works by chipping away. I've always worked on character development as a sculptor." Eugene Burger (magician) The approach I use when training presenters/ performers is a process of helping them: - edit: identifying their personality traits, qualities and values which are most helpful in connecting with their audience and downplaying all other traits; - exaggerate: heightening these selected traits for the stage; - expose: using behaviours which the audience trust because they instinctively know they are "leaky" eg participation, play, pressure and power. If you're interested in this approach, you can read the chapter on character development in my Hook Your Audience book here (it's open access until the end of October 2021) https://hookyouraudience.pressbooks.com/......thentic/ Paul |

Depending on what you mean by character, I really appreciated Master Payne’s thoughts in his lecture notes Sometimes the Jokes Are Just For Me. It is on Lulu. He suggested a book by Woody Pittman, but I have not read it, so can’t comment.
It is worth noting that Payne performs as different characters, such as a medieval jongleur, a Hogwarts wizard, and a sort of mad scientist. If you are looking for character for that sort of thing, his book is valuable. If you’re looking to make more subtle refinement to your own personality in crafting how you present yourself, it may not be the best place to go. Patrick |
