Hello all,
I recently started thinking about the coin expansion process to craft a [ coin. I recently purchased a lathe for an art project, non magic related. And I thought, if only for myself, it would be nice to learn the process of creating a gaff or two for my own act. I assumed always the act of expanded coins diameter would be to... heat it via an ethane torch and subsequently press it in evenly distributed manual press. Maybe even add, a non adhesive, such a s eather or even Vaseline. Two different approaches but trying to result the same.(leather may stick, vasaleine may take away patina) Any thoughts on this? I already had a CNC so I can make a chuck to hold the coin. I’m learning through the churning process now. It will obviously take some time. Diameter is difficult to get within a .001, so it looks good. I feel the “squish” is the best way to expand just not 100 percent sure. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Shawn

My (limited) understanding is the "squish" as you put it, is the right process, but it can result in lessening the relief of the coin's details, making the shell stand out from other coins.
The top custom gaffers have their ways of minimizing this, but I don't know how. |

Thanks for your reply inignntoya.
I have noticed in some sets I get they use the gaff as a higher relief coin. In an attempt I assume to reduce that contrast. Again thanks for your insight. Shawn
