Anyone have any tips about where one can get practice? There aren't too many psychic fairs where I am. (None now, of course. But not many under normal conditions.) Thanks.

I wouldn't consider psychic fairs for mental magic or anything even closely related. Have you considered open mics?

Found myself in such environments. What I did worked like a charm. I suggest you try it my friend: I suppose you're a magician too. So, nothing like a magic trick to approach perfect strangers. Because YES, ONLY PRACTICE ON PERFECT LAY STRANGERS!
Once you've performed your say, Ambitious card, 'happen' to notice their hands for example, if you want to use Palmistry (advice: ALWAYS use a system). When she noticed you saw something, arouse interest by telling her she has 'very interesting' hands. She WILL bite. Then, 'warn' her that you'll ONLY tell her what HER HAND IS SAYING. Nothing else. She will agree. Now, you're ready to start. Let go of any sense of guilt, and say whatever this person facing you inspires you. You'll amaze yourself. Never forget: whatever you say to her... BELIEVE in what you're saying. If you do, so will she. My two cents. Good luck Alexander. Love, Phedon

Join tarot and reading groups on Facebook. Read and Follow their rules. Once you’re part of the group start doing live broadcasts on the page foe readings through Facebook live. You’ll have lots of practice. Record them and watch back and take notes.

Thank you all for your responses. I'd like to practice in-person readings (I'd like to try my hand at tree readings - the individual's responsibility for the creation of the read structure appeals to me), so I don't relish FB, etc. Phedon's idea is a nice one, though I don't fancy approaching people with a "Hey do you wanna see a magic trick?" line! I could park myself in a café (soon!) and wait for people to come up to me - but that might result in over-caffeination.

I don't know how workable this would be, Alexander...hopefully it is of use.
When I was moving away from magic and into mentalism, I felt I really needed some intensive time to work -- okay practice -- on strangers. So I approached a tea shop in a trendy part of the city and proposed a specific block of time where I would perform at "no set fee" for their customers. The idea was that the tea shop would promote me and I would come on two of their off nights during the week. They didn't promote me at all -- which makes sense because they had no vested interest in doing so. I emailed specific people to come in and have their minds read. Since I was transitioning from magic to mentalism -- the emphasis was more on presentation and repetition of effects than anything else. I sat there alone for a significant part of the first evening...I did another push using all my social media options and the next night there was a steady trickle of people. After the third night I was as busy as I wanted to be and I was able to try out a real variety of effects I'd been working on. The experience taught me what elements worked for me and what ones didn't. I was able to learn the performance aspect very well. An unexpected bonus was in the tips people gave and the leads to several events that grew out of the project. Pick the right place and work hard at it. I thought of every performance like a different "class" in my self styled performer university course. Good luck to you! David

Create a stack of index cards with:
Name On Front Gender On Front Age On Front Zodiac Sign On Front Question On Back Using Dynamite Mentalism and Psychometry A-Z, and knowing their Zodiac Sign (imagine you know this via a peek or PA, or what have you) give a reading with the available information. After the reading is done, read the question on the back and see how accurate the reading was. You can crowd source the questions by just posting on social media asking people to reply with a question they'd ask a psychic. Shuffle up the cards and go to town. |

I don't recommend psychic fairs unless you are really experienced. You will be competing with people who know what they are doing and you could be sitting there all day without doing a single reading. The other issue is that the fairs have their regular readers and you will find it hard to get a spot in the first place.
I would advise finding a flea market somewhere to set up. The odds are you will be the only psychic there and you won't have any competition. You will not have to give a big cut of the action to the promoters either as you would at a psychic fair. Rent at flea markets is very cheap. And you can charge what you like for a reading. At many psychic fairs the price is fixed by the promoters. If you are doing it for the experience rather than for the money you can quote a low price and you should be pretty busy. |
