I still have some great vinyl ... Kiki Dee, Elkie Brooks, Beatles, Rolling Stones.
Collecting retro vinyl is still a big thing here in the UK. Some new groups also produce their albums on vinyl. It's a "tactile thing" I think. |

Collecting vinyl is a huge phenomenon now, with special magazines devoted to those who have caught the bug. For those who are thinking of selling, my advice is to avoid the stores (Chessman mentioned about being offered a pittance for a box of records...it still happens). Instead, put an ad up online or in a Café, etc. Recently, I set up a record sale in a driveway; and there were 3 collectors who showed up half hour early. Know approximate value by research online; but note that prices are often overinflated by sellers who have time to wait. The collectors I recently met skipped over the classical records, and larger labels like Capitol, and went straight for the jazz, blues and punk on smaller labels. However, these choices should not be considered the choices of all collectors (obviously there are collector fans of other genres as well).
A special thanx to Laurie for the science article. I've heard musicians (and collectors) use the term "presence" to describe playing vinyl. Definition: feeling as if the band is playing right in front of you. Of course nothing beats the real thing. Lastly, I recently (pre-covid!) heard a Bach organ concert; and was looking for the pipes that create the magnificent sound. Turns out, the musician was using a series of bluetooth speakers placed all over the cavernous room. amazing. Lynn |

I still have all my albums. I don't know the exact number, but it's few hundred. A couple of 45's as well, including one by the Beatles from the 60's.

I have a box of about 50 of my favourite LPs in my front hall closet. Out of the way and out of mind. I no longer have a record player. At one point, I thought I might frame and hang the best LP covers on a wall, though.

One of my prized possessions is a Rolling Stones EP from the '60s featuring them playing three or four songs live. (One notable song is "I'm All Right", which they rarely performed).
In the cover photos, Mick Jagger is seen wearing white pants with multiple buttons on the side of each leg. He says to the crowd of hysterically screaming girls: "I think I busted a button on me trousers. You wouldn't want me trousers to fall down now, would you?" ... At which the crowd goes absolutely insane! Also, during a break between songs, Charlie Watts plays a few random drum hits and accents. Causing Mick to spontaneously comment to the audience: "Charlie's good tonight, ain't he?" Since I too, don't have a record player any more, I haven't been able to listen to that EP for many years. But I can still hear ever note of their performance in my head! |

For me, one of the great things about vinyl, was all the creativity that went into the album covers and overall packaging.
There were some wonderful die-cut covers like the Stone's "Some Girls" and albums that included fold out posters. Still have a few. One of my favorite designs was Alice Cooper's "School’s Out" with paper panties around the album.

I remember a "Little Annie Fanny" (Playboy magazine) where she was dealing with the rock and roll world. At one point, an "Alice Cooper" type character comes up to Annie's friend (a rock promoter) and starts going on about the new album they came out with, all these different gimmicks and bells and whistles, while the promoter keeps asking; "So, what's on the album?" After the third question, the Cooper character goes; "Oh my God! We forgot to include an album!:

There's no way a James Bond film, starring Roger Moore, could live up to an Alice Cooper title song! Then I got his autograph for my daughter, and asked if he'd say "Happy birthday, Lauren," for her. (Phone held discreetly off to one side, Comic Con hates recording) He looked at my phone and said; "Lauren? This is your birthday song! It isn't very long!" My daughter later squealed!

Cooper is one of the more interesting Rock Stars to listen to. He has some amazing stories.
This was from an interview on NPR: On Vaudeville "When guys like Groucho Marx would come to the show, he always called me, he says, 'You're the last hope for vaudeville.' And he would bring Jack Benny and George Burns and Mae West. And people like that would come to the show, because it was vaudeville to them. They said, 'Ah, remember 1923? The Great Floyd used to do that! Remember? Of course, he would have doves come out of his sleeves when he --' And this was nothing new to these guys. They would, you know, Groucho would come to the show and he'd see it, and he'd go, 'Ah, rawr rawr rawr.' You know, he'd insult everybody there. 'Excuse me, I got to go insult the maitre d'.' You know, that kind of thing. We were best of friends, Groucho and I were. But they saw it as vaudeville, and actually that's what it is. It's rock 'n' roll vaudeville."

Just a little update on vinyl experiences since my posting on June 19! I've sold $850 worth of vinyl since then to collectors who want: Punk (the biggest seller... esp small label 45s); Blues (which sells a bit better than rock to collectors I've met); small combo jazz (Miles Davis small combos sell better than orchestral like Sketches of Spain); folk music (again small label is more treasured); Opera (on foreign labels); Foreign records of all kinds on foreign labels; Disco (esp the odd colored plastic EPs ... extended play 45s that dj's used a lot). I've not had any luck with 78's, but there are collectors of those also.
There are rare birds out there worth a fortune; but I didn't have any. typical example of rare bird is Bob Dylan early release of Freewheelin with tracks later deleted. Don't give up on your vinyl. Somne of you mentioned jacket artwork... there are collectors of those also. The collectors I've met tend to be young! And they're not just in it for the collecting... they enjoy it often on their high-tech turntables (which connect to bluetooth, can scan on computer and copy to CD). Lynn |
