Hello all,
I'm looking for advice from many of you who I'm sure have already solved this problem. As I've been working through paperback books, I am having an issue keeping the book open while trying to work with cards in my hands. It sounds like such a simple issue, but I've tried everything from book stands to propping the book open using my legs and nothing is easy enough to allow me to completely focus on the described moves rather than fidgeting with the book. As an example, right now I am working through One Degree (Vanishing Inc. paperback). Because of how much of the page (top to bottom) is utilized and how quickly you need to turn the pages while reading the book, I'm finding that I'm spending more time adjusting the book per trick than actually working through the moves in the hands. I can't wait to hear what your brilliant minds have come up with to solve this because I am at my wits' end! |

I would recommend a music stand that has the arms to hold down the sheet music. The stands are typically adjustable in height.
Thanks, Daniel |

I sometimes use a recipe book holder, I have one that has a lip at the bottom which holds books open quite well. The only problem is lifting the book out of the stand slightly to flip a page.

Depends on the size, weight, thickness, and binding of the book; solutions that work for one don't necessarily work for others.
Lots of clever ideas here (be sure to follow all the links).

I've had several book rests over the years. None are perfect, and they all struggle near the beginning and end of a book, but the best I've found is this one:

Here's two different types of book weights.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. It interesting to see what you all use. I’ll probably have to pick up some book weights and practice folding clothes hangers.

It's why I always find myself gravitating to my hardcover books with nice sewn (lay flat) bindings.

Completely agree, Chris. Sometimes the cost of being able to get the hard bound books are so much higher, I find myself with a paperback edition. I definitely didn’t have this problem with the Art of Astonishment series!

I’ve not done this with a magic book, but a couple of music books I own were “perfect bound.” I took them to a local print shop, had the binding cut off and spiral binding added. Cost about $6 when I did it and I can leave it open at any song I like.
Maybe I’ll do this with some magic books, now that I’m thinking of it. Patrick |

Patrick - I'm glad to hear someone else mention that. I was hoping for a non-destructive solution, but I'm thinking if someone else is doing it, it must not be THAT drastic!
