So I found a great treat. Nightmare Alley audio book is available through public libraries. My library uses a free app to lend and stream digital media. Yours probably does too. I know of two such free services (Libby and Hoopla) but there may be more. The library system in my state doesn't have much of specific interest to mentalists but they have Nighmare Alley so I thought you'd all like to know. Check your public library web page, it's amazing what they have for free.

Of course, nothing from the public library is really “free”. It’s funded by the taxpayers, which is you and me.
The library in my city was fairly small. I wondered how much it cost per year to operate it? I was was shocked to learn the annual operating budget was $5,000,000 per year at a the time (perhaps 15 years ago). It’s gone up significantly since then. This year’s budget appropriation is about $25,000,000 including $15,000,000 for a renovation project. For a city of about 30,000 people that works out to be about $800 per person. Just for this year. If you exclude the $15,000,000 renovation expense, as it is a one time capital expense, it still cost $10,000,000 per year to operate our library. Or $333 per person per year. I’m sure they have the Nightmare Alley audio book, but it’s definitely not “free”. BTW, I’m not knocking the public library system. I’ve gotten my share of use from it in the past. It’s just rather shocking to look at the numbers and see how much a small community library costs to run to provide a service many perceive as “free”. Several years ago I bought the Audible version of Nightmare Alley and it is really good. Although I do prefer the movie. |

The Audible version is excellent, as is the film. I also have a graphic novel version which is very good too.
However, there is a remake of the movie due soon, the quality of which remains to be seen.
