It was really good, not his best material though. Had a feeling he wasn't going to fool them...

Yeah, he’s about as good as it gets as to closeup coin magic…just beautiful work, so deliberate and fairly presented. But hard to fool those that know the basic workings of the art (luckily most laymen do not).😉 Actually, David Roth himself did not fool them, but out of great respect for his wonderful & lasting contributions to the genre, they still (most fittingly IMHO) gave him the prize. 👑🏆
Thankfully, in the end, some things are as they should be. 🙏🏽

Really, you can't fool them with sleight of hand, because all they need to say is that you used sleight of hand, and they win. And they don't need to explain every move. They certainly knew some of Shoot's moves, but I doubt they knew all of it (and I am sure the jumbo coin appearance fooled them). When I performed, they knew the basic gist, even if they didn't catch the changeover palms that went right by them and everyone (as well as the Bertram move on the second coin). As long as they know the basics, it's enough (except with Eric Meade, who used the Johnny Thompson rule and surprised them.
Oh, and Roth fooled them on the three coin vanish using the Open Servante, as he also fooled Mike Close and Johnny Thompson. David told me they edited out the exchange about it. But they were fooled. Whether or not they gave him the trophy because of that or because of what they said, who knows. The Open Servante, btw, was NOT in the book, and they had no idea where the coins went.

I was about to mention Eric Mead's framing, but you beat me to it.
What's the Johnny Thompson rule? |

At the beginning of his routine Meade flat out stated that according to Johnny Thompson, who was one of the magic consultants of the show before he passed, if laymen are fooled by 90% of a routine, but figure out 10%, they will say they weren't fooled. Magicians, however, may understand 90% of a trick, but if they don't figure out the remaining 10% then they are fooled. Going by this statement, Penn and Teller would probably never "win", because they rarely can reconstruct an entire routine. They only need to understand just enough to explain the main concept. So, for Eric's performance only, they said that they were fooled by a classic Ramsay routine (and don't think they are unaware of the contruction of this routine, with the cylinder and stack). Anyone else would not have won, and they discounted that rule for any future performance.
One other thing I should mention - the producers really don't care about the fooling part, they tell every contestant that all they want is a good performance. The fooling thing is a gimmick to sell the show. And Penn and Teller love to see good magic, even if they know how it's done. Good magic equals good TV.

Ah, I hadn't remembered him using a name, just the general principle of the 90/10 split, and the different opinions.
I've definitely gotten the sense of performance being king on the show, so that fits. In the end they want something that a lay audience will enjoy, so it has to be fun to watch, for sure. |
