FYI,
I found an inexpensive ($15) rune stone tile set at Barnes and Noble. It comes with 25 tiles and a velvet bag to store them in. I wish the booklet had a few better graphics to create auxiliary props to use with the set, but a web search should proved ample graphics to use. I had to buy a set! Now I need to research magician sources for their use in routines. Phil |

Mysteries of the Runes, available at www.JimMagus.com, was the first book on the subject, and has a section on different ways of forcing a particular stone, reading the stones with or without a casting cloth, and a number of rune stone routines, including my classic and legendary "Remains of the Reich Runemaster" routine. With permission to use some of my material, Van Warren issued a book on the subject a bit later that I believe was titled At The Gates of Wyrr. I do not know if his is still available. New Invocation while under Tony Andruzzi had an issue devoted to rune stones.

It can be ordered online here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/rune-ma......77152538 The description is missing, but that is the packaging mine came in. The 5 stones shown "on the cover" are 5 actual stones seen through a transparency. The other 20 are behind the rest of the front. If you enlarge the photo you can see that it included 25 stones and the velvet bag as stated at the bottom. Phil |

I love runes. One of the difficulties with using them as a prop is that they are already tied to a certain sort of perception. They are “Viking” and used for fortune telling. (Yeah, I know the Elder Futhark predates the Vikings and all that - I’m talking perception.) This means any magic tricks benefit from acknowledging the connection and are reduced if the runes become only counting tiles. Give some weight to the mystical side and actually learn what each rune means. Most magic tricks will have a hard time playing better than a good reading.
They are also easy to make up for yourself with polymer clay or air dry clay if you want to introduce some sneakiness into the mix. Just saying. Patrick |

I'm usually a treasure-hunter of whatever's in the store at any given visit and never think about doing that.
Thanks, Phil!

Kudos and thanks to docguitarman for taking the time to share with us a wonderful and yet inexpensive bizarre prop.
In a realm where so many accoutrements of the art are quite expensive (and, in my experience, worth every penny), it's great to have some options for those not quite ready to sell their (fiscal) soul in pursuit of the craft. |

The price is exceptional. It won't 'rune' your bank account.

Thanks all for the kind remarks.
If any are interested, maybe we can discuss ways of gimmicking the specific B&N tiles for effects. As to forcing, I'm considering the PATEO. So if any have the B&N tiles we can explore ways of subtly marking one tile. Of course, there is also equivoque using the original and unaltered stones. Phil |

I made a set out of air dry modelling clay which I roll into a ball, flatten then scribe it with runes copied from google. The good bit about making your own is that you can gaff them any way you want. If you are concerned about them looking home made, which they don't, explain to to the audience that of course it is impossible to get an a old set but in any case it is important for each runecaster to make their own - you can even explain how you get he clay from a local riverbank under a full moon

I've actually just ordered a set myself, once they are in my possesion I'll pass on my thoughts as far as gimmicking or marking them.
I second the Mysteries Of The Runes by Jim Magus suggestion, more than just ideas but a lot of content on the runes themselves, meanings and original uses that add an extra layrer to performances. |

In case anybody is curious, my set just came in and they have a bit of a glossy finish on the back of them, which lends itself pretty well so a small smudge from a greasy finger on the back as a way of marking a specific rune, which matches well with the PATEO idea to get a specific rune selected when shuffled face-down by a spectator. Easy enough to apply on the fly.
