I just got Mnemonica for Xmas, and was wondering if that is a "self contained" journey if I read (and of course, practice/memorize/etc) the book, or did others have a different way to enable their journey? I've read a bunch of threads but there seem to be a lot of external resources (apps, other books, aids, etc. Thanks!

Hey buddy! Welcome to the world of memorized deck magic . I'm a Redford stack user but that doesn't mean we can't be friends heh. The most important part is to start working on getting your stack memorized. I opted for the good old fashioned mnemonic peg system + flash cards on Quizlet, but your mileage may vary.
Simon Aronson's Memories Are Made of This (free PDF) provides great insights for starting your journey with a memorized stack. In terms of a "self contained journey" it depends what you're looking for! As you mentioned there are a bunch of material with external resources relevant to Mnemonica. For example, if you're looking for help in memorizing the stack apart from the resources Tamariz provides in the book, you can look into "The Memory Arts" or Jamie Grant's "Scenic 52" or "Mnemonica Trainer" by Rick Lax. There are also a few websites and apps that can game-ify the learning process if helpful. If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed at the idea of memorizing the entire stack, know that you can get started performing many tricks with just half of the stack memorized (described in the book). There is some material out there such as Vincent Hedan's book "Amnesia" that describes effects using Mnemonica; however, you do not need to have the stack memorized to perform any of the effects in the book. You might enjoy some of his blog posts where he answers questions like "why use a stack?" "choosing a stack" and how to memorize your stack: - https://magic.vincenthedan.com/blogs/art......-a-stack - https://magic.vincenthedan.com/blogs/art......-a-stack - https://magic.vincenthedan.com/blogs/art......ur-stack There's also the Mnemonica Miracles DVD set by Juan Tamariz, which contains material that is identical to what's published in the book. Pasteboard Alchemist (user) posted a wonderful review back in 2014 at the Café cross-referencing the book and DVDs (5th post down in the following link: https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......start=30 ) All in all, there is no one journey you have to follow. Don't worry about any fear of missing out with all the published material out there. Once you know your stack cold you're well on your way into the journey. Let me know if you have any questions or would like further guidance or more specifics etc etc. |

If you read and learn everything in Mnemonica, you'd be a step ahead of many. I'd hesitate to think of any single book or even author as "the" self contained journey to MD mastery but if you chose only one, then Juan Tamariz is not a bad choice. There are numerous other great resources out there, many of which can be found in a small search of this forum. You might find something interesting in this small article about starting out with mem-deck material.
