Anyone has bought this effect? |

That does look good. The ending pull is fishy looking but probably not for laymen. What do you get with it?

Although I'm guessing they also probably provide a matching silk or you could use your own if the color matches. I'm sure you could easily make the gimmick with a different color if you wanted to use a different color silk. It's an interesting addition to the old 'Silk Thru Glass'. I first learned it from Bill Tarr's book 101 Easy To Do Magic Tricks . There is a variant version of the effect in the Mark Wilson Course in Magic by U.F. Grant called 'The Penetrating Handkerchief'. In both versions a silk handkerchief is placed into a glass , then the mouth of the glass is covered with a napkin and a rubber band snapped tightly around the napkin , sealing the mouth of the glass. The magician then apparently pulls the silk handkerchief through the solid bottom of the glass. It is a very good effect, only lessened perhaps by it's inclusion in so many "beginners magic books" (like the two already named ... I've seen it in at least five other books ... I can't remember where it originated ... probably in Hoffman or maybe as late as Tarbell ? NOTE: I just did a quick check and there is a version in the Tarbell Course in Volume 6 , Tan Hock Chuan's 'Silk Through the Glass'.) This version by Quique Marduk adds something which attempts to make the penetration of the silk through the glass more visible. I think it's a clever idea , but I'm not really so sure I'm sold on whether it improves on the classic effect that much ? I think some magic is just more magical when it takes place "under cover", you know ? As noted , the end move pulling the silk thru the glass looked a bit off to me in the video, but I know exactly what I'm looking for, an audience presumably would not. Frank Daniel's illustration of the effect as it appears in Bill Tarr's book. The silk is pulled through the bottom of the glass while still under cover of the napkin that seals the glass. Is it better if you "see" the silk visibly penetrate the glass or is it more mysterious if it penetrates under cover ? Click here to view attached image. |

Agree, don't like how the end looks when the silk is "pulled thru" the glass.

I was also bothered by the fact that there's clearly a corner sticking out of the glass and then there's a lot of hiding the side of the glass. I think it could look better if it were inserted fully, then stolen out in the act of covering it. The motivation to pull out (then put away) a coin in order to go to the pocket also feels very weak.
I like the overall concept, but I also suspect it won't work too easily for anything other silk colors. |
