Hello
Can hypnosis be learnt from books, or do you have to be taught by somebody? If it can be learnt from the written word alone, what books are out there to get the ball rolling for a beginner? Gaz |

Umm.... my experience with this is yhes, yes it can be learnt from books. In particular You want to pick up ormond mcgills encyclopidea of stage hypnotism.
Now I guess you want to use hypnosis to create some stunning effects and not just make people act like a fool. Sooo, after you have read mcgills work and understood the basics of suggestion read everything you can by luke jermay. |

I'd answer this with a qualified "yes." Yes, you can learn the basics and the theory from books, but to get good at it, you need practice. And training helps, as well; demonstration of techniques is usually much clearer than mere written descriptions. Plus, the trainer can point out mistakes you're making and help you internalize everything faster. When you're studying on your own, it can be difficult to realize what you're doing wrong.
You *can*, however, learn adequately from books, videos, and the like if you apply yourself and practice the stuff, making an effort to notice flaws and errors and correct them. I just think it'd be easier learning hypnosis with a trainer. The only downside to having a trainer is ... it can cost a lot more than self-study. Which is why I haven't gotten a certification yet. I have book knowledge and one weekend course deal. Enough to be dangerous. |

Of course you can learn hypnosis from a book. You can also learn how to ride a bicycle from a book, but until you actually go out and do it, and then do it consistently, it really isn't useable.
There are scores of books, videos, DVD's, weekend classes where you can learn hypnosis. I've used clinical hypnosis in my own practice for years. Despite what you may hear, it is a different thing than stage hypnosis. In a clinical setting, I use hypnosis to help clients shift their perception of whatever it is that ails them. From that new perspective, they can move beyond it. On stage, I'm there to entertain. That is the keyword. Being able to hypnotize someone and being able to entertain using hypnosis are two different animals. Here is a standard bit as an example, you ask someone to forget the number 8, the number 8 is completely gone from their vocabulary. So now when they count, they count... 5, 6, 7, 9, 10. Great! How is that even entertaining? When do you use a bit like this? At the beginning of a show? In the middle? Do you close with it? What do you do to work with the subject to get maximum reaction out of them? How do you play with this bit without making them feel stupid? How do you make it side-spliting funny? What other bits do you weave in with this one to enhance it. Do you let it stand alone? How do you convey all this to the audience? So it's more than just learning to be able to hypnotize someone, but that's where you need to start. |

I'm trained in hypnosis ten years, I did therapiy and entertainment as a side line and got bored with it then turned to mentalism, I now combine my skills with mentalism where I do my best to disguise hypnosis, I prefere direct suggestion, and eirkison tecneques.
You are best to get every thing on hypnosis you can if you want to learn it, books, cd's go to see hypnotists perform, Theory is very important as there are some interesting phenomea tat can occur and you need to know the law where you live, in england their is a 1958 act as I recall wher eyou need a licance to use it, I'm luckey, where I live my people are not smart enough to even aknowledge it's existance in law.

I am, a mindreader and a stage hypnotist. I perform good old workign men's clubs as well as holiday camps in the main. I also get incredibly bored with teh hypnosis shows that's why I like to vary myself and push the mindreading and not the hypno work.
