I love magic as just as much as anyone else but I have a specific challenge I would like to talk about. It is the fact that many magic videos do not include CC (Closed-Captioning) for the hearing impaired.
One thing that needs to be understood is that the technology for voice recognition still has a long way to go to the point of FULLY automatically converting voice to CC. YouTube is doing a tremendous job but still needs work. Regular movies we see on TV with CC is done in advance by an individual or group of professionals to the point of perfection before it is released to the public. The News on TV has an individual that does it live and is not without a lot of mistakes. I recently received something from Penguin Magic that included a link to a Vimeo video that has absolutely no CC. Penguin magic says they currently don’t have the capability to include CC but are looking into it. At least Penguin Magic has responded with positivity which has not always been the case with other vendors. The deaf community needs understanding and support. We also like to perform magic as well as anyone else and deserve equal opportunity to know what is being said on these videos. Please help encourage vendors to include CC for all of us, not just the deaf community. Thank you, Keith Mitchell |
