Being a maths student I am interested in all kinds of mathematical principles besides sleights. Yet it is often a problem to present those things to an audience of laymen. So here's my question:
Does anybody perform any effects using the Automatic Placement Principle in the real world? There are several nice applications in print (Marlo's Faro Notes, Jennings '67,..) but for some reason I only find myself trying those tricks for other magicians. Greetings, Denis (and sorry for the English...) |

Although I don't use it, Martin Nash has a killer effect yhat uses Automatic Placement combined with Elmsley's Penelope Principle. It is published in his trilogy although I'm not sure which book - probably the second. I can check up on that if you need me to.

I'm also quite fond of mathematical principles that automatically places cards in desired positions (or forces cards). The ones I actually use for people are LIIIkelihood (Semi-Automatic Card Tricks II), Clock O' Doom (John Bannon's) and Lucky 14 (A trick from Jamie Badman's Underground Change Manuscript. Can also be found at http://www.jonracherbaumer.com I think). I so far haven't used the specific Automatic Placement for laymen, but am working on some to try out eventually.

And don't forget Stewart James' material...and some of Eddie Joseph's for using mathematical ideas to position cards.

Coming back to the Automatic Placement I basically see 3 possible no-touch - selection processes:
- spectator thinks of a number, counts down so many cards and pockets them, then counts down again to that number and remembers card. - spectator cuts off packet, counts packet and counts down again in the deck (or does a faro check...) and remembers card. - Spectator cuts off thicker packet, deals it into two even piles (adding one card if he cut off an odd number), pockets one pile, remembers bottom card of other pile and drops it back on the deck. For some reason I am not very happy with them (too much counting). Penelope's Principle seems to offer effects that are more performable (if you do faro work). And: if anybody knows anything about the reprint of this Nash Trilogy let me know... Greetings, Denis (Thomas, I just reread your effect in the "Underground Change" Manuscript. I overlooked it the first time, thanks for pointing it out again!) |

Alex Elmsley has some amazing routines using the faro shuffle and mathmatical principles. Most notably "the penelope principle" which allows you to make a prediction before you begin the trick and then the spectator cuts of any amount of cards they like. You then count down to that number (a normal deal) and the card at that number matches your prediction, works every time.
It fools me and I know how it's done. You can find it in The Complete Works of Alex Elmsley. |

I regret if anybody did not read the Elmsely books (especially Volume 2). They contain outstanding magic and principles!
BUY THEM!!!!! |

Bob King once did a lecture and many of his effects were mathematical, good ones at that. He also used maths to his advantage in his brether crimp books for locating cards etc.
