I can't believe this is my first ever visit to the Café! It looks like I've missed out on so many opportunities to probe the minds of some of the great contemporary names in magic.
I've been a bit passive with the magic over the last 5 or so years (proper jobs etc..) but the passion never disappeared. Just bought myself a few books with the intention of getting the juices really flowing and look forward to the journey they will take me on. I bought The Paper Engine by Aaron Fisher, Darwin Ortiz at the Card table, and Jennings 67 by Richard Kaufman. At first glance they look great!! So then, my first question to The Magic Café is: Now that I want to rebuild my knowledge and skills base, should I be buying books or the more modern medium of DVD? Many Thanks. P.S. Apologies for the username - it was simply the first thing that came into my head when I registered. |

Given the choice of one or the other I would say
choose books. (but if you can I would say choose the best of both . How's that for a non-helpful answer ?!) You can ask the Moderators to change your user name if you think of a better one or tire of the one you have . Go to the Tech Help sections and post a message asking a moderator to change your user name to _____________________ . Welcome to the Café. |

Thanks David.
I've put in a request to change my username - I think it may have given the impression that I'm either a very slick magician or earn money in less sophisticated ways. Best Regards, Maaaagic! P.S. Oh and thanks for your reply. However, I don't currently own a DVD player so I have time to fully contemplate your advice! |

Books definitely books, magicians have been using books for years so they cant be wrong, there is also a lot more to learn from a book. the plus with a DVD is that you can see the tricks actually performed infront of you, but with a well written and illustrated book this is also possible

Books it then! That's the answer I was hoping for as they usually offer good value.
Good luck with the book Tom. Unfortunately, I seem to be either a bit intelligently or creatively challenged (see New User Name) at the moment to be able to contribute anything useful. Sorry. Cheers, Maaaagic! (New User Name) |

Hi David, good name. This question comes up all the time on all the forums. The consinsis answer is always to go with books, usually Bobo and Royal road to Card Magic.
I love books, collect books, and love to read;however.I've owed copies of Bobo Modern Coin Magic for nearly fifty years, but I have never succeded inlearning anything out of it (other than the Bobo switch)dispite years of off and on study.Last month I bought the Michal Ammar Basic Cion DVD from L&L and the light came on.Once I could see what he was talking about,I understood what the various palms were and where my hangups had been. Now I've aquired finger and Downs palms I'm not afraid to use and my Classis palm is coming along.Do get the books and study them, but get some videos, subscribe to a magazine, join a club, ask question and find someone to show you. Lots of luck.

Hi Constantine,
Which name did you like best? Babyoil? Maaagic! or Denham? Not a lot I can do about Denham. I recently ordered some DVD's for the first time - I just hope they don't make me a lazy student of magic (read that as lazier student of magic). Retired Showman? IS that possible? |
