There is a thread over in the Workers category about the Mod Stack which I like but I think it needs some visibility here in Shuffled not Stirred so I'm posting a link to it here and then add some comments here.

I made the below post over in the workers category in the thread above but I think we would get better discussion over here.
Evan, The version of the Mod Stack that I saw has very long runs of reds and long runs of blacks 6 red cards, 9 black cards, 10 reds, 9 blacks, 10 reds, 8 blacks The first 15 physical cards of the Mod Stack: 2H, 5D, 7H, 10D, QH, AH, AC, 8C, JS, KS, 2C, 5S, 7C, 10S, QC Alternating suit colors in the imaginary stack is a bad thing and causes this problem. To me this makes the Mod Stack unusable, but I think it can be fixed. One comical solution would be to have a funny deck where the diamonds are black and the clubs are red, this would solve the long runs of the same color problem. But seriously perhaps a better solution would be to change the suit sequence from DSHC to DHSC where Diamonds are still zero, but Hearts are 1, Spades are 2, clubs are still 3. And make the appropriate changes in the imaginary stack and of course in the physical deck. I believe your calculations would remain the same other than just mentally treating hearts as 1 and spades as 2. I know we like to make spades equal 1, and hearts equal 2 but something's got to give to solve the long runs of same color cards and using DHSC I think solves the problem and at least salvages the meaning of Diamonds equals 0 and Clubs equal 3. If you make this change (you may already have done something to solve the long color runs and if so I apologize), this would make the Mod Stack truly awesome. You might call it the Mod-RC Stack (RC to mean Random Color). Note: I had to make this same sacrifice (swapping the spades with the hearts) to get a good color distribution in my Method G. fyi I am planning on posting Method G2 to incorporate starting with zero (thank you) instead of 1 for the first suit and moving one of the kings to imaginary position 52 (thank you again). The sole purpose of this change from my Method G is to eliminate my use of subtracting 1 from the quotient under certain situations. My suit order in Method G2 will be SDHC and the spades will have a zero count. Your mod stack is 16 years ahead of my Method G, but like you I came up with the method D and then method G independently of knowing about your mod stack. I did however know about the Harding stack and I realized that instead of a imaginary spread of suits that I could substitute an imaginary spread of values IE aces, twos, threes etc so this is how I came to Method G. I later came to know there are probably others who came to this same realization before us as Doug Dyment referenced above. Please post about the suit color issue. Thanks much. glowball |
