Is there A professional and non-professional version of Sands of the desert? I noticed that and some places this is for sale for $1,200, while in other places this is for sale for $30. Can anyone explain the difference?

What you get. The "cheaper" version gives you the sand and basic instructions. The other one you refer to also includes a custom made bowl, a flight case, and "time tested" routine (vs basic instructions). I assume the bulk of the price is the routine.
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

Ohhh "scent"! Yes. The difference is like Chanel vs Brut.

There are different methods for preparing the sand. Each has it's own set of advantages/disadvantages. If you're looking at adding the effect to you repertoire, do a little research. I made my own for years from colored sand I picked up at the local hobby shop. Properly presented, Sands of the Desert is a great effect. |

I’ve seen two versions since I first performed the trick way back in the early 1960s. The oldest and best version involves “squeezing” a handful of colored sand into a retrievable “lump.” The newer and (in my humble opinion) lesser version “dribbles” a stream of sand into the water in order to (hopefully) form a retrievable uniform color lump. This second version was initially sold by educational “science toy” stores and web sites. The first version, described in detail in Greater Magic, goes back to (at least) the 1930s.
I think the big problem has always been finding the chemicals to turn water black and, at the end, once again clear. As I understand it these are not without certain use hazards. Those who know more than me are welcome to comment on this last point. |
