Hello:
Not sure if this is the right Forum to discuss this, but, has anyone had trouble lately with placing order on the Haines House of Cards Website? I placed an order with them 5 days ago and, yes, their Website took my money and shipping fee but I have received ZERO feedback from them on when the order will ship....they do to answer the phone nor my email. Needless to say I am very frustrated by this. Anything going on behind the scenes here that I should be aware of because 'tis does not smell right to me? |

Never mind. I resolved this issue with PayPal.
I will NEVER do business with Haines House of Cards again. |

Haines is the shop that made me fall in love with magic. I have very fond memories of going with my Grandparents and watching Bill Pryor perform any trick that we wanted to see. There were magicians sessioning, the shelves were packed with books by the greats, and the back room was always buzzing with conversation.
4-5 years ago, I dropped in and it looked like a different place. The magicians and ladies that I was used to seeing were all gone, and the previous owner’s Granddaughter had moved back from L.A. to take over the operation. The shelves didn’t have all the books I was used to seeing, and the magical apparatus was less abundant. The new owners were very friendly and it seemed like they were doing their best to keep the business alive, but I’m sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Not that it’s any excuse for lack of communication, but they don’t have the staff that they once had, so it might take longer to get a response these days. |

Thank you for your question. I’m Ron Calhoun. Long time customer of Haines.
Cutting to the chase. Betty, the owner, has retired. She turned the running of the business over to Joe Farag. Joe’s father became ill and he started caring for him. His father lives in northern Indiana and Hanes is located in The Cincinnati Ohio area. So he’s five hours away from the store. This is now 2020 so the Covid walk-in business has completely died. Betty‘s granddaughter has come back from LA and has expressed an interest in buying the business. Unfortunately with Joe being out of state no walking business to speak of the shop restricted their hours to only a few hours on Saturday. Sadly, my buddy Joe Farag was diagnosed with cancer and passed away a few months ago. Ironically his dad is still alive and battling cancer. Betty simply unable to run the business and sadly her granddaughter doesn’t have the funds or the knowledge to run this business. Are you gonna contact Betty’s daughter and she Doesn’t know what’s going to be going on. Unfortunately the fantastic Bill prior, and Betty‘s husband winzig had passed away. It is my opinion that the store itself will never reopen. And since Joe was the person who was running the web website it’s future is in doubt. I wish I had happier news.

Very sad to hear this news. They were another one of the classic dealers from the past.

This is, unfortunately one small, static "Frozen-In-Time" moment that is part of the "Bigger Picture" when it comes to Online Ordering specifically related to Magic Props and "Magic Dealers".
These days with EVERYONE using the Internet for EVERYTHING, it is normal for us to "just order it Online". The problem is, that Websites that act as "Online Stores" are VERY GOOD at quickly and easily accepting your payment. But, and this is a BIG but, sometimes, some of the owners of those stores are often totally unconcerned about the legitimacy of those orders or fulfilling them promptly with a decent level of customer service. I say this because I have had SEVERAL instances of the unfortunately recurring theme of "I'm glad to take your money but don't bother me about fulfilling your order" syndrome, which I personally find to be extremely distasteful, rude, and wrong. As magicians ordering Online we all need to be VERY careful about whom we order from. I'm seeing a growing number of those emerging..........and it REALLY bothers me. The solution to this, I believe, is to not tolerate it. |

I would add to my message above that The World of Magic is a lot smaller on the inside looking out than on the outside looking in.
At the end of the day, all that we, as Magicians have, is our personal reputation. IF and WHEN we lose that, we've lost everything. |

Sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I am from the Northern Kentucky area, so it was my local magic shop. I fell out of practice, but have since been reignited with my daughter wanting to learn. I went up last week to find the store was closed.

...............Sad to hear. I was looking through my books and found the one about the FA-KO deck. I later found the deck, too. So, I looked online and found that the company's website is down. I am from Ohio so I had heard of them all my life.

I enjoyed the Delirium Tremon's deck. Now I understand why I cannot find one again. Many fun memories using their cards they produced for us.
