I have seen mention of a totally hands free ACAAN setup involving 26 decks. I love this idea. It is really nice for a living room, or home office, or lounge. I remember Dennis Loomis did a nice write up about it.
But I would like to drive it down to 13 decks. I was wondering if anyone has written up a method for this, with the maths to know which deck to have the spectator grab. Rather then inventing the wheel it would be a major time saver if someone already published it. I assume the best method is to incorporate a joker in each deck. I think that would allow the total deck count to go from 26 to 13. I think Berglas also employed the 26 deck setup at familiar locations. Has anyone explored this? |

Barrie Richardson in Theater of the Mind had a multiple deck ACAAN as one of his methods. I forget how many he got it down to, but it was 13 or fewer. I'll track it down when I have a little more time and post the number of decks he used.

I think Barrie used 4 if I remember corrently?
I want to go totally hands off. So for instance if jokers need to be removed, I would just ask the spec to do that. I don't remember if Barries was totally hands off? |

I think it uses 5 decks (?) He might have revised it use even fewer. His approach is to use multiple outs to get the maximum possible "hits" from each deck. Personally I found some of the "procedures" you might ask the spectator to execute to be potentially a bit unreliable. Nevertheless, you will almost certainly find some useful ideas, even if you decide not to adopt all of them. There is one very simple thing you can do to get 6 hits from each deck instead of the 4 you have already figured out. This means you could use 9 decks instead of 13. |

Barrie's 13 deck solution is hands off--but there is some sleight restriction on the number, and I don't think I'm giving away too much if I say that part of it involves either a direct hit or the card after. No jokers.
One deck is on the table, and 12 other decks are presumably body loaded or otherwise easily accessible. Barrie essentially leaves the switch itself as an exercise for the reader. I don't think I would have the guts to do that in front of a large audience... But I have done his one deck version where the performer has the deck in a little holder roped around his neck, and the spec does the counting. It's really practical and easy to learn. It's in Act Two.

Hi Nikodemus, I do have MIRACAAN and think the thinking is great. But like you said, there is too much procedure, cutting, etc. that's why I want to do 13 decks. It cuts down the procedure to just having them remove the jokers if needed.
Landmark, I didn't know Barrie had a 13 deck version. I will pull out his TOTM book to check it out. As well as Act Two. Thank you. |
