I SALUTE you Father and Son! that's a great duo. You should be performing together.
I envy your son because before at my young age my parents never approved of magic till I was 13. Now I'm 17 and I'm only starting to learn a lot in magic. Good luck in magic and I hope we'll meet someday. Karl |

Wow, wish my father was supportive in my magic. I am about to turn 18, been doing magic about 7 serious years, and never once has my family said 'good luck!'.. Wish I had a family member into magic. Anyways, that is a great story, hope you and your son have a lot of success!!

Think about this...
You've given your son a great gift! You didn't give him the "fish", you taught him "how" to fish! If he pursues this wholeheartedly, as I'm sure he will...(seeing that he went to get audiences on his own...) he already has a means to support himself when he's an adult... A vocation... Depending on his passion for it, could be part time to a normal job OR it could be VEGAS! Good on you Buddy! Both of ya's!

If he continues to love magic, he'll be very good at it and will be successful. Being seven, I don't think he realizes what I'm doing (besides being "boring") when I talk about the principles behind the tricks I teach him. Maybe some of it will set in, but I expect to repeat lessons a few times.
As he gets a little older, I'm sure it will be easier to convince him to practice fundamentals. For now, he's getting great reactions with a lot of self-working tricks (presented well) and some of the fun sleight of hand that he has so much fun doing he can't help himself but practice!

Wow, nice job with your son. I used to perform at about the same age but I really wasn't that good... Now at 16 I am enjoying sleight of hand more than ever and hope to become a purist If I can. Yeah, if he keeps going at the rate he is, watch out! Heheh, Yeah keep him going! It'd be a shame for so much talent to die out...

Great story Joe, I too have tried to pass some of this art onto my kids as well. My daughter is 7 and my son is 6 and I have been teaching them magic for the last couple of years as well. Now so far it's been the very basic dime to penny and the like and they both do pretty good. My daughter is definitely the showman, she loves to perform. But for some reason despite my best efforts after my son performs every trick he wants to go back and show everyone how he did it. I guess he too desires to share the art with everyone.

Maybe a good way to go would be to explain how it could affect the spectator to learn the secret: a. It could offend them that they were "tricked" by something so simple. b. The mystery that made it magic is lost forever. My son has that problem too. Worse is the fact that he wants to perform as soon as he knows the secret. I tell him that knowing how something is done is not the same as knowing how to do it. He has revealed a few secrets by performing too soon. I just reeled him in by not teaching him new tricks until he's mastered the old ones. Joe

Yeah, a seven years old kid is really cute, he can make a lot of buck using this.
I'd wish my parents did the same when I was a kid. |

I will definitely try to explain it to him the way you mentioned and I bet that helps somewhat. I run into the same problem as well with both of my kids. They want to show someone as soon as they know the secret and I remember being the exact same way. I will have to try the approach of not showing them more until they have mastered what they know and see how it goes. One of the biggest problems I have now is when the stuff goes home with them they lose track of it and it's hard not to let them take it home because they are so excited about it. I've tried giving them each a special magic box to keep their stuff in and it helps a little. I do love to do magic with them and take them to magic shows. I would love to take them to see David Copperfield. Joe |

I have my closeup case and a couple of shipping boxes where I keep my effects. Once I get a suitcase table I should be able to get rid of the boxes. My son has two drawers in his room that are dedicated to his magic tricks, and a crayon-box that he carries like a briefcase for the tricks he does when we go show magic.
As much as I love Copperfield, I have to recommend Lance Burton instead. David has gone to the sensational/sensual side of magic and Lance is much more family-friendly these days.
I need a stage name.

Hi Joe,
Good call I will have to try for Lance Burton as well. I've seen him once before and he was great. I've tried the magic drawer and magic box approach but I'm fighting and uphill battle when they go back to mom's it all gets scattered. Joe |
