There was a lot of Roth memorabilia that was up for auction at Potter & Potter. A suitcase containing several of Roth's props (the Planet, Rainbow, Sleeve, mini table, funnel, close-up mat, balls for the three ball trick, etc, went for TWENTY SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! David had dupes of some of the props (for example, I have the other sleeve (they were cut from Mike Skinner's jacket, along with the mirror and big coin),and a friend has the other funnel and bottle, etc. I didn't see the mirror and big coin in the grouping of stuff that goes with the sleeve, or the pot of gold that goes with the rainbow, but nevertheless it was a wonderful collection. I hope the buyer was someone like Copperfield who would display the props in his museum.

Somehow the final bid went up since I last looked. Not sure how they are able to do that unless there are mail in bids or something like that. Final bid - $31,200

Crazy prices considering how much they listed the top estimate at. Leaves us meme mortals out of any auctions.

Somebody obviously thought it was worth it. And had the funds. People who fit both categories are likely in a small group.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

Years ago when David needed money, I told him to sell his first Bobo book, given to him in 1968 by his parents. We figured he could get $1000-$1500 for it, but somehow he couldn't find someone to purchase it (I don't think he tried very hard). It went at auction for $10,200. I am sure it's value soared due to his passing, which of course makes sense. I actually found it in his apartment when I was helping to clean it out, and made sure the right person got it. So, I was a bit surprised that it was put up for auction. My guess is that the seller (one of David's life long friends) had so much stuff, that only the pieces that had the most value for this person were kept, and the rest was for others to have an opportunity for a memory of David. Again, I hope some of David's stuff goes to a place where other magicians can view it. There were a lot of interesting items up for auction in addition to the suitcase of props and his Bobo. Some of his awards, photos signed to him by Vernon, some books in his collection, coins and purses, and the rattle gimmick he originally used for the Tuning Fork as well as the one made for him by Joe Porper. A great collection of Roth items, and I am happy that they found good homes. And a big thanks to the person who made this all happen, because I am sure David would have wanted it to be done this way.

I was reading the final prices and I found strange the big price discrepancies between P&P estimates and the actual price paid. In many cases several orders of magnitude. The briefcase, the coin boxes and the coin purses are examples, several books went for double the high estimate.
It sounds like P&P did not understood Roth's importance for the magic community/collectors, which should be their actual job. |

I realize that some people here don't know how to access the auction prices, so here is the link in case people would like to see what sold:
