How often do you guys open a new deck of cards?
It used to be only when the one I was using before made my doubles look like quadruples. Then it was every other day(trying to follow the advice of Erdnase as closely as I thought money would allow, who said every 3 hours) Now it's every day, with small exceptions (i.e. not enough time to practice on a brand new deck in a day... no reason to get rid of an unused deck). What about everyone else? And any reasons why? Reading posts about Darwin Ortiz inspired me... six hours a day, 500 decks a year?! I realized that I needed to raise my level and get moving. I always perform with new decks, so why not always practice with them? |

I'm at 2 decks a week which seems like a lot to me. My deck usage really shot up with the practice and use of a card fold effect.
I like the idea of keeping a deck working as long as possible and being able to adapt to using a worn deck as well as a new one. When someone hands me a deck to perform an effect, I want to be able to perform rather than rely on the spring and cleanliness of a new deck. |

I think you're going a bit OTT. One a week should be sufficient if you are just practicing (and even that's still a lot).
If you are a performer and you regularly do parties and other close-up magic performances, you may wnat to open a new deck every time you do that, but I don't really think it is necessary to use a new deck of cards until your old ones feel and look used and old. -Niko
When you do something right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Agreed... which is why I also use the deck from the previous day for some of my practice. If someone hands me a deck that is more worn than that, I can usually pull off a few simple moves or use a simple principle and then move on.

When the cards start sticking, doubles get deceptively easy, and running single cards tends to not work out. Also, I find pinky/thumb counting alot easier with a newer deck. The way I see it, it's a good investment. Instead of throwing tons of money at brand new magic books, throw about $30-40 a month on the props I use and make the most out of the magic I have. |

Wow, three decks a week!
I usually open a new deck every time I go to work, which is once a week, and by the time I am finished, I have half a deck left. This works perfectly because I take this half deck and combine it with cards of past weeks to make a new practice deck. Kind of confusing? Possibly. But it works for me. |

I am with Perer on this on. I use maybe 6-12 decks a YEAR! Of course I do keep them in my card guard when not in use, so I think that helps out a bit.
It seems like a BIG waste of $$ to use a deck a day...Come on people....do you really NEED to use a new deck everyday? Like it was said, what if you have someone hand you a deck of cards? Are you going to do only a couple of tricks? It would seem to me that it kinda discredits your ability as a magician. I can only do a couple of tricks because theses cards are old....OH BOY! Just my opinion.....

I dread opening a new deck...After a week or so, the cards have broke in just perfect for me. New cards are so stiff, and just dang slippery. Plus, a week later when I've lost or destroyed a few cards and its a bit smaller, I tend to work better as well...

I do a lot of riffle shuffle work and it bends the cards, especially after several hours and so they become thicker.
I like a deck in good condition but I can use a deck in old too.i don't really see that much difference. Unless its about 6 weeks old and to get to the top card you need a ladder.

It don't matter if you can only do a couple tricks with a real old deck. its not good to do so many that they don't want you to do another one 3 is good I think and I can do more than 3 with a crap deck I just wont.
ask harry why he dont want people to know he makes $200 a month for all these ads! thats like $4000 a month! oh but SHHH! harry isnt a real person!

Once in two weeks or something. Simply because I don't have enough money to buy new ones every time I want to and I don't faro-shuffle and stuff so the cards don't have to be in perfect condition for me. I change them, when my fans begin to look messy or my doubles too obvious.

David Stone said he started doing coin magic because the Bicycle decks were too expensive in France.
I'm fortunate to see Bruce Cervon perform quite often. His card magic is the smoothest thing. The deck he uses, though, is far from being new. I compare it to a scared face: it shows it has lived. federico |

I write the date I open my cards on the flap of my card case, this way I can study how long a deck lasts. inquisitive friends often ask me how many decks of cards I have, and they always seem surprised to hear that I often by a new deck every few months.
I personally feel that there is no use in buying a new deck every day or week, work with them till you no longer feel that they are good. I generally get by 2 months without buying a new deck of cards. But when I do get a deck I also get a spare so that if any surprise performances crop up I can use these, or if not I can postpone buying the next couple. I think one of the problems with buying cards in bulk is that I would end up opening new decks far too quickly and long before I actually needed to. owen |

I have one deck a month if I buy bicycles.
But if I use Bee's I have 1 deck per 2 months. |
