This is going on in the UK, I'm not sure how far it is spread. BEWARE!!!
The thieves place a simple cover over the slot for your card to make a new slot. This slot has a card reader in it. so they read your magnetic strip before it goes into the machine. Then there is a pinhole camera placed above the keypad. Usually disguised as a ATM info strip and stuck on (as the fake slot) with double sided sticky tape. Note: if you see this setup you get a free camera and card reader if you are quick. No but really, report it to whoever you have to.

First let me say THANK YOU Partizan for the information. And THANK YOU Scott for the link.
With that said, I don't know what to make of it. I don't know if Snopes is to be trusted or not (they say it is true). I find it hard to believe that the bank would not discover this scam right away. And the cost of setting up such a "high tech" system and the time required to make it work would seem too costly and time consuming to make it practical (profitable) for the thief. If this really is true, then it makes me wonder what else is out there that we need to be aware of. Gee, how can we trust anything or anybody? Very cool scam though. Iven

I,too have read about this and did see pictures of the items used. It takes a team of people (3) to pull off but if they're quick (and of course they are), they could take a nice chunk fairly quickly. I wish I could recall what publication I saw this in but I cannot.
In December of '06 I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. One in a million people worldwide are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Sarcomas account for 1% of all cancers. Knowledge is power!

I think the device is called a "Lebanese Loop" is it not? (Sounds like a contraceptive!)

There are many 'private' not bank related ATMS where this could be a real problem...
You want more? Albertsons and some other stores are mounting tiny cameras under some products and taking your picture when you get an item...it is then linked to your 'club card' chip and also to the cash register when you check the item out. Not only do these stores double or triple the price then discount if you have their card...now they are compiling a data base of images of shoppers. In Europe, these chips are being placed in products...so when you walk into a store with a certain pair of shoes for example, it will identify you as a cheap skate or a big spender. There is testing underway to even being able to scan your pockets or purse for other chips in credit cards etc..of course if $$ was chipped it could count your cash! Talk about Magic usage! What an act! Ah Tech.... Here is an interesting site (among many) that tells all... http://www.nocards.org/news/archive1.shtml Doug http://LionPoint.com
