I am not sure if everyone received the July issue of Magic yet, but on page 8 is a clone of the Milson Worth Chinese Flame Clock. Correct me if I am wrong but is that not a dressed up version of the original and what about the manufacturing rights?
The company manufacturing the effect is called Sterlini Magic Mfg. Co.Would sure love to hear more feedback on this as I may be wrong but it sure resembles the original. By the way it is a beautiful piece of magic and lists numerous options on the type's of wood used. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

And let's not forget to mention the genius that created the effect originally, Ed Massey. He wasn't the best of builders by any stretch, but his apparatus was always extremely clever....Squeezeaway Block, Cabinet of Deodar, etc.

Hi Rennie,
Looks like the original Flame Clock to me, although the ad states that "Sterlini Magic has reworked this amazing effect enabling it to be presented close up and at extreme angles". As to manufacturing rights, I have no idea. I'm sure someone else will have more information?? I know I have seen other versions of the Flame Clock sold over the years, mostly of inferior quality. |

Massey was a genious. His woodworking was not on par with Thayer/Owen but as good as some of the Grant and Abbott apparatus. I have his Flame Clock that I bought nearly 40 years ago and it still functions perfectly. The Cabinet of Deodar is somewhat crudely built but is a masterpiece of deception.

I have an original Mislon Worth's Flame Clock which is a very beautiful display piece in perfect working condition. It is a fine effect to do in a parlor setting, not in a typical, close-up setting due to the angles involved. I also saw the ad by Sterlini Magic stating that they have re-worked it for close-up performance. I would also like to know what they did ,if anything, to make their "version" suitable for close-up.

Can some one give me some info.
I just picked up a chinese flame clock. I don't think it's a Milson, because I was looking at some pictures. But I can't seem to find who made mine. It's not a Sterlini either. Help please |

Post a photo.
There were various different decoration schemes on the Milson-Worth flame clocks.

Ed Massey gave permission to Abbott's to produce several of his items including the Chinese Flame Clock, the Squeezeaway Blocks and the wonderful Strange Cabinet of Deodar. Beyond that, though, I don't know. Both Massey and Percy Abbott are gone, of course, and I don't know that Greg Bordner would have any information as to whether or not permission was given to Worth Magic who was the next builder of the trick. After Jim Simon passed away, Lynn Johnson bought Worth Magic from his surviving son and it then evolved to Milson/Worth Industries. Jim Simon actually made it in two sizes, the one we are all used to seeing and a HUGE giant model which you rarely see any more. I had one of those big ones years ago and it was BIG, but beautiful. Back then, however, if someone made a dramatically finer model of a prop, very few complained and it didn't often become a controversy.

I'd say definitely not MW. The doors on the MW flame clocks that I've seen, and the one that I own, are much smaller and set in further from the cabinet's sides.
